We are well over 100 cards on the Worldwake unofficial spoiler on MTGS and Conley gives us a few quick hits, Tom looks at Tribal and EDH and Eric is our all-around man this show. The next new Planesalker novel, Test of Metal, is apparently coming out on October 5th, 2010 and adds more fuel to the “Return to Mirrodin” rumor fire. Some better pictures of the deck boxes for Phyrexia vs. the Coalition Duel Decks spawns another discussion of the reserved list (only pertains to NON-PREMIUM cards) with the thought it may contain Phyrexian Negator. Pro Tour San Diego is Feb 19-21 and will feature three Legacy side events. Congratulations to Nick Veccie for winning the the Atlanta TCGPlayer $5k Standard tourney with Red Deck Wins (top 8 deck lists).

The Worldwake spoiler machine is in full effect with the official WoTC spoilers starting this week (stay tuned to the end for the very newest spoilers). Tom and Steve pick some favorites from the current spoiled list and some oddities from the Orb of Insight. Legion Event’s Magic Cruise 2 is quickly approaching on Feb 7th and attendance is marked at over 100! Channel Fireball is getting crazy with some Sealed $2K Zendikar and M10 tournaments for a $10 entry fee! And some cool historical info on our preview card, Bestial Menace, and it’s nickname of “Cone of Creatures” in a 2002 Mark Rosewater article.

This Week in Magic
We have Tom, Conley, Steve AND GAVIN this week! Hoo Yeah! First we discuss the SCG $10k in Dallas / Fortworth and mostly the somewhat anti-climatic finals for the Legacy portion. Group Game Draft looks like a blast if you have a group of kitchen magic players and some boosters. M2011 is officially announced along with the paper-version of the Duels of the Planeswalkers decks ($14.99, 60-card deck with five rares [one foil] and a M10 booster). The schedule for the “Nix Tix” drafts on MTGO has been listed. We also explore the “Official Reprint Policy Reserved Card List” for some incredibly broken cards that will hopefully never see the light of day again (Pyramids, Conch Horn, Digideridoo, etc.).

What Have We Been Playing?
Tom and Steve enjoyed some EDH and Planechase. Gavin has been doing some MTGO drafting. Conley has been studying extended and working his pro-magic player booty at his new job at Enchanted Grounds.

The Worldwake spoiler season has begun! We have our first few tidbits about Worldwake with information from a French MTG source with our first largely confirmed card, Smother! We also have hints towards the new Jace with milling abilities, the new keyword nicknamed “Multi-kicker” with a few possible cards and more! Wizards also announces a very cool new way to spoil one of the new planeswalker cards for Worldwake with the “Worldwake Planeswalker Chase” starting Monday, December 14th, with a interesting twist on geocaching. It is confirmed that the January FNM promo is indeed Tidehollow Sculler. EDH banned list update, Grindstone is unbanned and Painter’s Servant is banned! Congratulations to Stan of Deck Builders for winning the Idaho State Championship and our SCG favorite, Bennie Smith, for getting 2nd place at the Virginia State Championship!

Unless you don’t follow the magic news, Worlds 2009 in Rome was this past weekend and is the main topic of discussion. Andre Coimbra won the individual competition and team China won the team championship. Conley Woods did us proud netting cold hard cash and pro points with his 44th place finish, along with a feature of his standard deck, Magical Christmasland, on a Deck Tech. Congratulations to Anssi Myllymäki (Anathik) for winning the MTGO world championship. 2009 Player of the Year is Yuuya Watanabe, 2009 Rookie of the Year is Lino Burgold and the Hall of Fame class of 2009 is Antoine Ruel, Kamiel Cornelissen, Frank Karsten. Oddities for the weekend include the disqualification of Team USA, Team Canada and Team Turkey. Also, check out the mysterious Worlds invitation for David Williams (official WoTC invitation policy and invites)! Check out the top extended deck lists (including Ben Stark’s Scapeshift deck tech) and top 8 standard decklists. New DCI judge promos seen in Rome include Burning Wish and Polluted Delta. Aaron Forsythe also lets us know via Twitter some scum stole his Legacy deck while gunslinging! Various MTGO updates including the December 2009 magic player rewards promos. The December FNM promo is Sakura-Tribe Elder in some amazingly janky new digs.

GP Minneapolis was this past weekend, Steve and Tom were in attendance and congratulations to Zohar Bhagat for being champion of the third largest tournament EVER in North America. Steve and Tom share some amazing EDH times with an epic gaming ending after Steve Twincast’s Tom’s just cast Flame Fusilade (that punk). It is also confirmed in Mark Rosewater’s latest article that Richard Garfield has re-joined the MTG design team and on the team for the future set code-named “Shake”. Randy Beuhler announces via his twitter that Worlds in Rome will be his last in the broadcast booth and that Richard Hagon will likely take over the reins.

And good luck to Conley in Worlds!!!!

Discussion abounds regarding EDH being listed as an official side-event format for Worlds 2009 in Rome. Check out the Japanese DCI promo Shepard of the the Lost. Mark Rosewater has a great article on the design of Zendikar and some more info about “Convertible Turtle”! “Dark Ascension” is a new trademark / patent filed on September 29th, not much more is known at this time. New Jace planeswalker card to be in Worldwake. SCG Philadelphia $10K was this past weekend with Standard and Legacy tournaments with a top 8 Legacy place by a deck with Dark Depths and Vampire Hexmage along with Jund Aggro, also check out the top 16 decklists for the Standard portion. On the note of the reserve list: Feroz’s Ban was printed in 7th Ed while on the Reserved list and the list was updated before onslaught came out (about 1 year and a half later) for Clone when Feroz’s Ban was removed. The reserve list is mentioned by players but is hasn’t mattered in 12 years.

Also i think that this will bring up the price of power due to the new interest in Vintage.

Confirms that many of the “Priceless treasure” cards appear to have previously been in circulation. His local pre-release saw a Phyrexian Dreadnaught, minty fresh Badlands and a “jank Mirrodin rare”. He also agrees that the health of Magic seems very good and compares it to the influx of new players when Revised was on the streets. He would also like to see the promotions continue and an EDH promo!

He would love to see a video podcast of Gavin and Conley playing some matches. He also defends the (horrific) Gatsby sandwich. He also helps Tom with his Dutch pronounciation: On the Dutch front, the name you were trying to pronounce had an “ij” in it, this set of letters is the “long y” sound (almost like a “y”). In Scrabble in Dutch the “ij” appears on one tile.

Demands an apology for our attack on the noble beast, Pillarfield Ox. Here is his story:
The situation: it’s game three, round three in our local prerelease. I’ve just wrathed (ok, “judged”) the board, wiping 4 of my opponents creatures and a poor kor skyfisher. I then played a eternity vessel, putting on a healthy 16 charge counters on it. I have three lands in my hand and a pillarfield ox. My opponent has two ior ruin expeditions, and nothing else.
My cow hits the board and whittles my opponent to four life. My opponent then proceeds to topdeck every ally in his deck. I draw some lucky removal, and the occasional threat, but he’s got me against the wall. Luckily, I have two things going for me. One: I’m mana flooded. I’m able to make a land drop every turn I need two. Two: I have an ox. With a NET. On multiple occasions did my opponent have enough power to take me out. But he couldn’t. His army of adventurers, hardened by traveling the deadly perils of zendikar, attacking in coordinated barrages, were no match for my cow and his doubtlessly slobbery net. His murasa pyromancer never attacked, knowing fully well the doom he awaited were he to come face to face with my noble ox.
Certainly, my eternity vessel and knowing when to play lands were important to this victory. But when my opponent *ran out of cards in his library* (and no, I hadn’t cast a *single* mill effect), many, MANY turns later, I knew I owed my victory to that noble cow and his net.
I have a deckbox of retired cards that are special to me. My force of nature, that I recieved in a trade for a savanah. (I was ten.) My first fnm and magic game day prizes. My first cards (ornithopter and shatter, found on the road). That pillarfield ox has earned his place in that box, for decking an opponent in limited, in a deck with no decking cards whatsoever.

What does it mean when I buy product from a company who has the “authorized Wizards reseller” brand? See to the right for the full story if you want to read it.
Ron W is looking to get some extended art cards and is wondering if they are okay to use in tournaments?
(link to official WoTC stance of altered cards, and they are usually fine unless the extended art leads to confusion by obscuring the card title / casting cost / text box. Final decision is up to the head judge of the given event. )
Matthew R is greatly enjoying playing EDH and is currently pimping out a Sharuum deck with Mishra’s Workshop, darksteel forge, mana crypt, umezawa’s jitte, marsh flats, maze of ith, scrubland, tundra, undergound sea. He has a few questions for the hosts and listeners:
1) do you guys play with or against proxies?
2) what is the best play/game/mistake have you guys made in EDH?
The Dood wonders if anyone else has heard of “uncommon heavy” packs of Zendikar with 8 uncommons?
Paul S. III had a great time at his Zendikar pre-release playing both days and some great pulls from his packs:
Sat = misty rainforest and marsh flats along with two Luminarch Ascension (one foil!) with a Obsidian Fireheart
Sun = Lotus Cobra a Obsidian Fireheart another Luminarch Ascension Sorin Markov and two World Queller’s (one foil again!)
Kenyon from Japan reports he was able to open a “priceless” Plateau in a pack while drafting this weekend!

Monday Night Magic #174 – Push Button, Receive Bacon

The Zendikar pre-release has come on and gone this weekend so we have all 249 cards with some discussion of our sealed pools, draft and more. Also part of the hoopla was the absolute surprise from WoTC with the “Priceless Treasure” cards with a classic vintage card (think like Black Lotus or Mox Sapphire) replacing the land in packs (likely ~1 in 750 packs) and caused an amazing ripple of news over the weekend. Coming October 1st, WPN organizers will be able to play in a number of their own events. Ben Bleiweiss on SCG talks about the perceived shortages of Zendikar and that is most likely NOT intentional, simply a result of supply and demand (premium SCG article link). The full Oracle and Comprehensive Rules update for Zendikar will be delayed due to Mark Gottlieb battling the swine flu.

What Have We Been Playing?
Tom and Steve had a blast at the pre-release and Tom has fallen in love with Hedron Crab and are looking to get an apartment together. Tom also secretly desires to build a “Battle Cattle” deck with Pillarfield Ox! Eric sees a Tundra and two Force of Will’s opened at his event! We have two entire Planechase decks officially previewed, Elemental Thunder and Metallic Dreams! We discuss a bunch of the Plane cards, along with two more spoiled at GenCon and found on Star City Games (Grixis, Pool of Becoming). We also have a name for an upcoming Duel Decks found on the U.S. patent office and will be titled “Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs the Coalition”. We also have the continued “slow roll” previewing of Sorin on the official wizards site, Vampire Nighthawk on ManaNation and Warren Instigator on The Magic Show. Other full Zendikar previews are the new Wrath of God with Day of Judgement and Rampaging Baloths. We had Grand Prix Bangkok this weekend with some definite controversy and a congratulations to the winner, Shingou Kurihara! MTGO updates include some Banned and Restricted list updates and also the very strange snafu surrounding the cancelled Magic Online Season 5 Championships! Mark Rosewater lets us in on some cool news about the third set in the Zendikar block, titled “Prosper”, which will be a large 229-card set and designed to fit the theme of Zendikar, but with unique mechanics and able to be drafted by itself. Bennie Smith has a great article in a series about introducing EDH! Steve also notes that Star City Games is offering $100 for From The Vault: Exiled.

Masters Edition 3 spoiler is now out and interesting to see a large number of Portal: Three Kingdom cards with the ability of Horsemanship. Bill Starks has an interesting call to the grass roots MTG community to get Booster Draft as a PTQ format. We have our first four official Zendikar preview cards from Gen Con, including the return of Kicker and a new card sub-type, Trap! We have info about the Zendikar Game Day which gives us the name of the two promos, Nissa’s Chosen and Emeria Angel. The mysterious “You Decide!” poll on WoTC is revealed to be a cool ploy to reveal a new Sorin planeswalker card piece by piece for Zendikar. Nice large pics of the Zendikar booster packs, booster box and fat pack (looks like Chandra is back!). Check out the full sized pictures of all the new “Unhinged” style basic lands for Zendikar, they look amazing! And the September FNM promo is Watchwolf.

Monday Night Magic #167 – Planechase, ME3, FTV: Exiled and more!

Abe Sargent on SCG has announced the new 5-Color rules for the popular alternate constructed format and has a new official page with rules and updated B&R list at www.5-color.com. We officially have the rules for the upcoming Planechase alternate multiplayer format from WoTC in an initial four game packs and it looks to be pretty awesome and let’s you simulate walking the planes in a multiplayer game with great sweeping effects and you get to see two of the Plane cards! We also have a sneak peak of the new basic land appearance (in boosters and fat packs) in Zendikar and definitely remind us of the old Unglued / Unhinged basic lands, and this is a good thing. Congratulations to the 2009 Pro Tour Hall of Fame inductees: Antoine Ruel, Kamiel Cornelissen, Frank Karsten. Wizards has also given us the content list of the upcoming From The Vault: Exiled (*hint* Berserk, Balance, Strip Mine, Necropotence, Goblin Lackey and more!). Previews for the upcoming Master’s Edition 3 have started (to release on September 7) and have included some absolute bombs like Mana Drain, Bazaar of Baghdad, Land Tax, enemy duals. Also on the MTGO front, we have a sneaky announcement on the Gleemax forums about some upcoming Exclusive Commander (i.e. EDH) Theme Decks and the first two will be titled “Deathdancer Xira” and “Enchantress Rubinia” and plan to come out in late August. You can see what cards will be in the decks by following this short trick for MTGO “To view the cards, in client simply change your preference on number owned from >0 to =0. Check the tab after M10 or also filter by set and choose the Theme Deck Set”. The generals will be Rubinia Soulsinger and Xira Arien with hot cards including Chain Lightning and All Hallow’s Eve.

Worldwake has been confirmed as the name of the second set in the Zendikar block, 145 cards, comes out on 2/5/2010. We have an unofficial card image for Chandra Flamedancer that appears to be a new planeswalker card in Zendikar, seen on a Facebook page and looks pretty convincing. New WPN promos have been spotted with Mind Control and Rise from the Grave, the art on the new Mind Control is fantastic. Check out the new “Premium Deck Series: Slivers” coming out in November with a full 60-card all foil deck with 5 rares and one Mythic Rare (hopefully Sliver Queen!). Congratulations to Mark Purvis for being promoted to Brand Manager for magic, that means the associate Brand Manager position is open and you can apply online at Hasbro! See this month’s upper tier promos for the MTGO Magic Player Rewards program.

This Week in Magic
We have Conley, Gavin and Eric joining Tom this week to discuss the bomb that landed on Wednesday with the rules changes that come with M10. Read the full article here and the main rule change people are discussing is a change to combat that combat damage does not use the stack. Obviously lots of controversy, but some good examples and discussion to be found here. You can also read thoughts from Zvi Mowshowitz on Top 8 Magic, Randy Buehler, Power 9 Pro. We have also seen the new M10 dual lands and a few new cards (yeah Acidic Slime!). The 7th year anniversary of MTGO runs from 6/17 – 7/15 with a bunch of special events. This Week in Magic
PT Honolulu was this past weekend with Kazuya Mitamura crowned champion, but representing us all was Conley Woods who made the top 4 and brought home $13,000! We are also proud to hear that Duels of the Planeswalkers will be coming out the XBLA on June 17th for 800 MS points ($10). We have also confirmed that there will be 3 planeswalkers in Zendikar, one of which is a returning planeswalker, and one of the new is Nissa Revane. Also, another Duel Decks has been announced, Liliana vs Garruk! Some M10 reprints have been confirmed (Shivan Dragon, Nightmare, White Knight) along with the release of the intro pack images giving us a glimpse of a few new cards. Bunch of news about the Planechase release and it’s connection with Zendikar. We also talk about WoTC official contest to design art for an upcoming show with RYZ where you can win $1,000 and an uncut foil sheet, check out the current entries and enter here along with a useful template. What Have We Been Playing?
Eric has been enjoying some awesome 8 and 16 man cube drafting. Jack has been dabbling in some Arcanis the Omnipotent EDH and the Jund Cascade Aggro deck. Tom has been playing more limited EDH and finding ways to kill his new nemesis, Diviner’s Wand.

Mea Culpa from Tom, thank for the correction regarding the Warp World deck from the Indianapolis PTQ was in the top 8, but did not win the PTQ. The winners of the Agents of Artifice fan art competition have been announced and you see the winners here. Grand Prix Seattle was this past weekend and the winner was Yann Massicard playing Doran, Faeries was popular and we have a ton of MTGCast hosts in the running including Stan Bessey of Deck Builders placing 14th, Gavin in 73rd and Conley 187th. We also had Nick Bonham, Pedro Rodriguez, Bryan Greer and Shannon Ericson also doing well! Here is the general info for GP Seattle and here are the top 8 decklists. We have officially seen the M10 release and prerelease promos (Queen of Ants and Vampire Nocturnus) and confirm the use of the term “battlefield” for being in play. There is a great debate article on fivewithflores.com discussing some topics brought up in the latest The Magic Show regarding table shuffling and deck randomization. Randy Buehler posts on his blog some info on the block constructed metagame for PT Honolulu and a round-by-round coverage of his monthly MTGO championship. PT Honolulu is this weekend and wish good luck to Gavin and Conley! We also hear from Kenneth Nagle’s twitter that he will be previewing an M10 card at PT Honolulu.

What Have We Been Playing?
Gavin and Conley have been playing some Standard and likely turning their sights towards draft and block constructed. :^) Tom playing some more limited EDH and dreaming of busting out some Vanguard.

Tom, Jack and Eric bring you a great show this week and start off with the revelation on Randy Buehler’s blog that Duels of the Planeswalker for the XBLA has passed Microsoft certification and should be coming soon. We also have an updated novel cover and sample chapter for the next Planeswalker magic novel titled The Purifying Fire. Some cool new WPN promos of Slave of Bolas and Marisi’s Twinclaws. The FNM promo for June is a cool “darker” art version of Mulldrifter. Eric scoops that we will be seeing more Duel Decks in the near future via Twitter with Elaine Chase.

We also discuss a bunch of Regionals decks including some cool innovations with Cascade + Swans of Bryn Argoll deck, Turbo Fog and my favorite, a zany Warp World deck that won the Illinois PTQ!

Tom and Conley are here this week to bring you a whole bunch of news along with discussion of Standard, Regionals (including Turbo Fog with suprising showing of 5 color control in face of the BW / GW token surge) and more. First, we talk about the new Planechase (Vanguard 2.0) cards just announced. We also discuss the rumors started by this comment on the Daily MTG twitter feed regarding llamas and alpacas that may suggest an Incan theme for Zendikar along with the revelation by Mark Rosewater that we will have Planeswalkers in Zendikar. Check out the interview with Doug Beyer, author of “Alara Unbroken” on the Book Nook show on YouTube. Wizards announces the largest number of active DCI players ever at 138,500! We have a discussion on the Extended Hypergenesis Cascade deck and here is a nice review article with example decklists of the “haste” camp and “shroud” camp. We have another official preview of Duels of the Planeswalker on the WoTC YouTube page, but still no release time given. Check out a bunch of articles discussing more about the pros / cons of mid-range decks from Adrian Sullivan, Mike Flores and LSV. Conley is preparing for PTQ Seattle and PT Honolulu with Standard, Block Constructed and lots of drafting. Tom is pumped after getting to play some limited EDH with his Teneb, the Harvester general along with some fun artifacts like Panoptic Mirror with Harmonize and Platinum Angel.

Eric, Conley, Jack and Tom are here this week to bring you some great news. We have two new card arts for M10 to restart the rumor mill and we have an unofficial M10 spoiler on MTGSalvation. Randy Buehler has a new blog, The Thinking Game, discussing magic and non-magic gaming. Conley and Eric discuss Nationals 2009 and all of its details. Based off newly registered trade marks [link 1, link 2] from WoTC, we have tips on Duel Decks: Garruck vs Lilliana, Worldwake, From the Vault: Planeswalkers, Rise of the Eldrazi, Planechase. LSV discussed (or bashes) mid-range decks and our tourney players discuss this viewpoint. Still no Duels of the Planeswalkers, so sad.
