This Week in Magic

Alara Reborn news is here and we have some doozies. First, we have some scans of the Alara Reborn booster packs and starts the rumor of a potential return of Coiling Oracle. And, we also have 10 cards in the unofficial spoiler on MTGSalvation including a little gem titled Marisi Twinclaw showing a new usage of hybrid mana and confirming hyrbid mana in the set. And check out a scan of our Rumbling Slum-worty Spellbreaker Behemoth!

Judges start salivating for this Maze of Ith judge promo spotted in the wild.

And there was that little announcement about Zendikar and the crazy rampant rumors regarding it being an Aztec, Mayan, dinosaurs, pirates, you name it set.

Eric also fills us in on some the updates on thestarkington post about the backpack thieving ring we discussed earlier that was uncovered at GP Chicago.

What We’ve Been Playing
Tom is on the Pauper train still, Eric talks about his PTQ and Gavin admits he finally did some Conflux drafting and played some MTGO.

lol… I got notified moments after this cast was posted.

    Ahhh… the power of Twitter.

  2. Conley says:

Yea I have requested specific packs from fellow drafters before usually as a joke. Its usually in the vein that “I will have a higher chance of opening the card on the pack.” That is.. I usually get rid of my Steward of Valerons etc, for better “cards” like Hellkite Overlord or whatever. It obviously means nothing, but its a fun predraft thing to do.

Regarding mana burn: If it does in fact leave us, I will be sad as I think it adds a section to the game that better players capitalize on. For example when someone forgets that their banneret has reduced the cost of one of their treefolk, and burns for 1 because of it. A better player would recognize this and avoid it, for reference, feel free to look at Jon Finkels most recent pro tour win coverage.

Also, it rewards good players for making decisions that a lesser player would not. For example when you have been hit with a Mistbind Clique trigger, most players just let it happen. But some players know that they have to float mana through their draw step in an effort to answer the Clique. That decision has to be made before you have ever seen a card. With no mana burn, it because automatic to simply float mana and thus removes another decision point from the game.

I am sure that if mana burn is removed I will adapt and all will end up ok, but I hope that any design space that is opened up is worth the removing of additional decision trees.

  3. Steve says:

You are 2Legit to get the Hammer wrong. Hammer down!

  4. AJ says:

Haven’t listened yet but CONLEY WON A PTQ!

  5. Conley says:

Lol.. I won that PTQ like 3 weeks ago, they just took forever to get the decklists in… Thank you for the excitement though. My article from last week has a breakdown of the deck if your interested :)

  6. Tommy says:

yeah at a triple shards draft once, a guy was trading his packs for packs with hellkite overlord on it. he traded one of his packs. He later found out the pack he traded away had an elspeth in it. lol

  7. @Conley I think you summed up the general feelings I have on Mana Burn quite well. Also nice to see your deck in the deck of the day section on the mothership. BDM twittered about it. I will Retweet after I get home.

  8. Adam says:

When the law firm brings out the big book of gotcha rules you can find mana burn at rule 300.3, not 450.7A. Close though. The voice lawyer voice got me in trouble. Our chancellor is visiting and I interrupted some meeting with my guffaws.

  9. joel from NY says:

great episode guys, I wasn’t feeling well with 100 degree fever on monday, but i looked forward to your podcast. Due to religion, me and a group of 9 others could not attend the FNM’s. SO, we formed a WMT (weekend magic tournament) the only thing we have to work on is prize support to encourage players to come.

Thanks for your hard work on the podcast,
    Joel From NY

  10. joel from NY says:

also the pack thing is more of a “pre-draft ritual” and sounds interesting, but nothing truely special

  11. sabbatica says:

Re: Help pick Tom’s new nickname!

Papa Bear – Come on, it made Jack so uncomfortable that you’re looking for a new nickname. Using it would be rude. Only use it when you want to torture him.
The Castmaster – This is a good one. :) It relates to mtgCAST and your position, like webMASTER. If you can get the ball rolling with this, you could end up being like the first guy who ever called himself “the webmaster”, whomever that was.
Magic Medic – It rolls off the tongue like Tribal Time with Tom, in other words, it doesn’t roll of the tongue, but the name might be worthy of a show segment like a deck doctor, except more generalized.
Captain Blowfly – As far as I’m concerened, Tom, you put Blowfly Infestation of the map, but when I see that card I still think “Gavin Infestation”. ^_^
The Oozemaster – Bloodhall Ooze is AWESOME, but can Oozes go the distance with you or are the just the next blowfly?
Big Pauper – How dedicated to pauper are you going to be? You might want a more durable and all purpose name.
Thomasauras Rex, Planeswalker – If you drop the Planeswalker and add a proper suffix, I’d either go with “Thomasaurus Rex” or “The CastMaster”.

  12. Nick says:

Every Trip-Shards draft I did I took Hellkite -> Sedris -> Sphinx Sovereign going in the order of the Shards. After the first couple drafts (where I opened a bomb like Sharuum or Flameblast every time) I decided to keep going with it for fun. Harder now, though, because Conflux doesn’t have an Esper pack for me.

  13. Jamuraa says:

Hey, thanks for the shout out to PureMTGO.com – I’ve written for the site before and think it’s great for MTGO articles.

Regarding Double Cast or whatever, I think they are trying to just make you randomize because ordering that much of your deck could be a big gain, right – like if you only have 1 Double cast spell and it was “in any order”, you could stack your whole deck. Also I envision that you just shuffle the cards that you flipped and then put them on the bottom. The other way for them to do this would be to have you put them on the bottom, and then shuffle your deck, but that doesn’t have the excitement / dissapointent of flipping a great card that you want and having to put it near the bottom of the deck (definitely not on top).

Also I was thinking about the no mana burn thing, and thinking that it makes Toil to Reknown suddenly a pretty awesome card. Gain life equal to at least your mana in play for 1G? I’ll take it!

  14. Conley says:

Hey Tom, regarding the Twitter feed (I would have just wrote to you on there but I am not really into yet) I believe that would be Mike Turian… no Mark that I know of, unless Rosewater and Turian had a kickass baby

  15. hamtastic says:

Jeez, that Jamuraa guy is everywhere!

I’m a fairly new subscriber to the MTGCast/MNM feed but it’s absolutely fantastic.

This was a really good episode, and it’s easily my favorite cast that I’ve found for Magic.

It may have been a good idea to link to any information about Mana Burn changes in the show notes, since it caused a few people to get all crazy about it and not knowing where it came from.

If they do remove it, I could see them adding errata for certain cards that might need it (like Spectral Searchlight) while removing the ‘this doesn’t cause mana burn’ from the Kamigawa Mana Snakes* and Mindslaver for pretty much a complete wash in regards to card changes.

*Kamigawa Mana Snakes would be a great name for a Japanese “White Snake” cover-band now that I think about it…

  16. Tommy says:

    Hi hamtastic!

Glad you enjoy the cast and welcome to the network.

    Cheers,
    Tom
