This Week in Magic
Tom, Jack and Eric bring you a great show this week and start off with the revelation on Randy Buehler’s blog that Duels of the Planeswalker for the XBLA has passed Microsoft certification and should be coming soon. We also have an updated novel cover and sample chapter for the next Planeswalker magic novel titled The Purifying Fire. Some cool new WPN promos of Slave of Bolas and Marisi’s Twinclaws. The FNM promo for June is a cool “darker” art version of Mulldrifter. Eric scoops that we will be seeing more Duel Decks in the near future via Twitter with Elaine Chase.
We also discuss a bunch of Regionals decks including some cool innovations with Cascade + Swans of Bryn Argoll deck, Turbo Fog and my favorite, a zany Warp World deck that won the Illinois PTQ!
And wish good luck to Gavin and Conley in the upcoming Seattle PTQ and PT Honolulu!
What Have We Been Playing?
Jack talks about some great Reaper King EDH, Tom is trying to bust open Arsenal Thresher in Pauper and Eric talks about his inability to avoid 5-color in drafting.

the two mechanics I want on one card?
cycling and dredge
hahahaha
I’d like Cycling and Transmute, or Transfigure if the card happens to be a creature. The ultimate utility cards.
@FearsEdge: I thought the same thing immediately! How about Banding and Deathtouch?
warp world didnt win the illinois ptq.kithkin did.warp world lost to cascade
This is awkward, but that Warp World deck didn’t win that PTQ. It top eighted, but BW Kithkin beat Swans in the finals.
Oh that warp world deck is fantastic, so is the swans+cascade. Definitely both are fun decks to play.
Haven’t listened to this pod yet – but one card I always wanted would have both Indestructible & Shroud (preferably Troll-Shroud).
Can Shroud & ‘You have Shroud’ count? (As in a True Believer w/shroud)?
i would want deathtouch with either first strike or double strike.
and double strike and trample >.>
Two Mechanics Together:
Banding + Exalted
Plainswalker:
Squee, The Undying
1BR
2 Loyalty
If Squee, The Undying would be put into your graveyard from play, instead return it to its owners hand.
+1: Put a 1/1 Goblin token into play
-2: Sacrifice a Goblin: Deal 3 damage to target creature or player
-6: All Goblins you control have +2/+2 and “Sacrifice this creature: Deal 1 damage to target player” until end of turn.
how about evoke and haunt to get the most out of your comes into play abilities
Damn you Wolfgang, you took my idea. If I could design a card here is what I’d design.
Card Name: Soul Assassin
Card Type: Creature – Human Assassin
Power/Toughness: 1/3
Casting Cost: 1BB (3)
Ability: Double Strike, Death touch
Card Art: A Royal Assassin-type character swinging two daggers at his enemy. One at his throat, the other towards his soul.
Flavor Text: “Bometimes once isn’t enough.”

If you regenerate someone with cascade do you cascade again?
I’m surprised that Tom didn’t get more into Agents of Artifice. I thought that the way the new planeswalkers (Jace, Liliana, and Tezzeret) were shown during battle scenes went a long way towards matching the feeling of a magical duel that you get when you play Magic. It still wasn’t as good of a match as Arena in this respect, but it was much better than the recent novels that just featured the simple mages and warriors of the current set’s setting rather than planeswalkers. I have to disagree with Jack regarding Jace’s moral conscience. It’s true that Jace did seem to feel a little bad at helping people do bad things during the book, but in the end (I don’t to give away any spoilers here) I didn’t really feel like I could look at Tezzeret, Liliana, or Jace as a hero or even anyone I could root for. They all seemed pretty self-centered and nihilistic to me. I haven’t gotten very far in Alara Unbroken yet and I still have hopes for Ajani and Sarkhan, but so far if I had to throw my support behind one planeswalker right now, it’d have to be Nicol Bolas. He’s at least entertaining if not a more ethical being than the others.
@YAY Bant Regeneration does not casue a creature to trigger Cascade again. This is because 1) you are not playing the spell again, and 2) regeneration does not cause the creature to change zones at all so even if cascade was a comes into play ability (which it is not) it would not trigger.
Kent Hrbek 3UG
Planeswalker – Hrbek
+3: Gain control of target permanent that contains the letters G. A. N. and T. in the card’s name. Return that permanent to the top of its owner’s library at end of turn.
-1: Deal 3 damage to target merfolk, herd animal or bird creature.
-2: Place a cooling counter on target permanent. That permanent does not untap during its controller’s untap step. Remove all cooling counters if Hrbek leaves play.
Starting loyalty: 14
Flavor Text: There was ease in Hrbek’s manner and a twinkle in his eyes,
There was grease on Hrbek’s fingers as he polished off some fries.
And when some popcorn spilled out as he lightly doffed his hat,
No stranger in the Dome could doubt ’twas Hrbek at the bat. by Phil Bolstra

Hope you enjoy Papa Bear

@Propagandist
I feel if Squee had a planeswalker card he would make use of Squee’s toy’s ability as a + ability, and squees embrace as – ability.
Squee’s revenge is too random tbh.
Possibly an ultimate where he gives all creatures you control the squee’s embrace (+2/+2 and the squee ability) as that would be awesome!
He wouldn’t be black either imo, either RW or RU
That is one of the coolest custom cards I have ever seen.
@Psi(>)
I like the idea of making him RU…
+2/+2 and Persist until end of turn sounds kinda black-ish…
Or when you say “Squee’s ability” do you mean something other than him being a repeatable annoyance?
I meant something along the lines of “All creature you control get +2/+2 and ‘When this creature is put into a graveyard from play this turn, return it to it’s owners hands”.
Persist would work easier i guess, just it was obviously a set mechanic.
But this card would then be awesome in RW as you could use it, attack and if you were in a bad position, then you’d simply wrath of god.
@Psi(>)
I agree, it would be sick for any RW Tokens deck, but the reasoning for White to be on Squee is weak. Hobgoblins are the only goblins that are white, white Black and Red is usually the place for Goblins. Add in the Raise Dead effect that Squee has on himself, and that smells alot like Black to me.
I’d love it if Ajani Vengeant was Blue/White because he’d be amazing in my Turbo-Fog deck, but that doesn’t mean that he SHOULD be Blue/White.
Also, the tokens Squee generates cannot go to their owner’s hand, so it’s not a very synergetic ability with his +1 ability. I would say this would be best for his Ultimate:
-6: All Goblins you control are +2/+2 and have “Sacrifice This Creature: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player” until end of turn. Full of Goblin flavor, an excellent Alpha Strike for any Goblin deck, and in the Red/Black color flavor.
*while Black and Red is usually the place for Goblins
–Typo–
I would love to see Cycling and Flashback.
U
Instant
Draw a card then discard a card.
2 Cylcing
B Flashback
Cobra’s Bite BG
Instant
Target creature gains deathtouch until end of turn.
Recover 2
“Yet the Mongoose’s victory was short-lived.”
Anyway, looking forward to your next episode.
I agree with psi. Squee would not be black. In the books, he’s kind of the idiot savant who always manages to save the day. Squee suffered far more than any of the other’s on weatherlight. (Note: the flavor text in Phyrexian Tyranny). Squee was incredibly cunning and resourceful for a goblin and ritually sacrificed himself for others. (note: Squee’s Embrace and Squee’s Revenge) I would however love to hear the story of how he became a planeswalker though.
Flavor Text to Sorrow’s Path
There is no sorrow in the face of war, it resides in the faces of the fallen.
