This Week in Magic
Mea Culpa from Tom, thank for the correction regarding the Warp World deck from the Indianapolis PTQ was in the top 8, but did not win the PTQ. The winners of the Agents of Artifice fan art competition have been announced and you see the winners here. Grand Prix Seattle was this past weekend and the winner was Yann Massicard playing Doran, Faeries was popular and we have a ton of MTGCast hosts in the running including Stan Bessey of Deck Builders placing 14th, Gavin in 73rd and Conley 187th. We also had Nick Bonham, Pedro Rodriguez, Bryan Greer and Shannon Ericson also doing well! Here is the general info for GP Seattle and here are the top 8 decklists. We have officially seen the M10 release and prerelease promos (Queen of Ants and Vampire Nocturnus) and confirm the use of the term “battlefield” for being in play. There is a great debate article on fivewithflores.com discussing some topics brought up in the latest The Magic Show regarding table shuffling and deck randomization. Randy Buehler posts on his blog some info on the block constructed metagame for PT Honolulu and a round-by-round coverage of his monthly MTGO championship. PT Honolulu is this weekend and wish good luck to Gavin and Conley! We also hear from Kenneth Nagle’s twitter that he will be previewing an M10 card at PT Honolulu.
What Have We Been Playing?
Gavin and Conley have been playing some Standard and likely turning their sights towards draft and block constructed. :^) Tom playing some more limited EDH and dreaming of busting out some Vanguard.
Listener Emails
Tons of great emails this week. Kudos to MacDaddy for his Hrbek the Planeswalker submission.

Oh wow, Sorrow’s Path. First time I ever saw that played was when a friend at school used it with Vigor. Yea, that was a gimmicky deck…this challenge really intrigues me though.
Well, here’s what I thought of:

Remember how a lot of old flavor text either quoted random books, contained secret easter eggs, or had little relevance to the card? Well how about all three!

Not really excited for the next coreset having a collection of too many coreset type cards as it is. Will probably buy singles if anything is stellar, unfortunately that means higher prices for singles as they’ll probably sell less than a more ‘original’ set. Oh and ‘Battlefield’ really, I mean REALLY ?!? Pokemon here we come, I call Lame-a-choo!

What’s more embarrasing than playing Sorrow’s Path? Loosing to someone playing Sorrow’s Path. If I PtE after someone activates Sorrow’s Path on a creature with Path of Anger’s Flame, do I get my hiking merit badge?

When I first saw the show’s title, I thought “wow, Hrbek must have some ability related to air conditioners” because growing up in North Dakota I saw Hrbek hocking that same damn air conditioner two or three times every commercial break during Twins games when I was a little kid in the 80’s.

I’m not sure what everyone is talking about, regarding to Magic turning into pokemon. For those of us who remember playing before there ever was a stack, we remember terms such as Summon ” “, instead of the very bland creature -” ” spells. Remember when the text read, your opponents suffer 1 point of damage instead of lose 1 life? I feel that magic has been on a slippery slope of losing the fantasy flavour it once held. There is no congruent story lines to be following anymore. Some of the new mechanics make know since as to why they are in particular sets. I agree that battlefield sounds a little corny, but I am ready for any type of flavour to be returned to this game. Is anyone else tired of all this Magic bashing? I give it 5 years when magic changes back from battlefield to “into play” and people will still kick and scream. Magic would be dead if it as a game didn’t grow as a whole.

I like the changes of “Battlefield” and “Casting”.
I quit Magic when Mercadian Masques came out and just recently started again around Conflux. I was saddened to see the Summon term removed from creatures. I always imagined the cards were the spells and that casting them made the creature appear. Call me a fantasy nerd, but that’s kind of why I play the game to begin with. Bringing more flavor back into the game seems like fun to me.
And anyone who thinks that calling “in play” the Battlefield will be confusing and make it difficult to judge M10 events, why? Every set that comes out has a new mechanic or two that turns the Pre-Release tourneys upside down and no one cries about it. Cascade was hotly debated at our most recent one for example. If anything I think taking “in play” and “play a card” out of the formula makes it EASIER to understand.

Hi,
Another great show Tom. Just for those who didn’t get the third Hrbek ability, for a long time Kent was the spokesman for Carrier Heating and Cooling (especially the Air Conditioners) hence the cooling counter ability.
Also starting loyalty of 14 matches Hrbek’s jersey number (if I remember correctly); it also was set high because Hrbek only played for the Twins which is pretty rare in professional baseball.
He is UG because Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 lakes and has its share of forests.
Sorrow’s Path sounds like the sidewalk outside of the Metrodome after a Vikings playoff game.
Keep up the good work!

“In order to throw your enemies to the fray, you must be willing to hurt both yourself and your allies; their compliance matters not”
UbeS! on June 2, 2009
I don’t get it!
Why complain about all that battlefield stuff? It’s just words, nothing more, nothing less. Perhaps it doesn’t bother me all that much because I’m dutch and all english sounds ..uhm.. foreign. In a couple of months we’ll all be used to it and we go back to talking about “the good old times when everything was so much different, and yeah it had it’s charm but glad it all changed”.
Ive been playing for quite some time now and I’ve seen more than one change like this. This is nothing compared to adding the stack…Stop being so conservative, you can’t stop change, in a couple of weeks you’ll all be putting cards in the battlefield as if you didn’t know any better… ;P

Great show guys! I really enjoyed the link to the deck stacking (shuffling) article/blog post you threw on for us to take a look at. Definitely feel like posts and articles like those are a must read for any player new and old.
Really its sad that it comes down to people simply cheating to win, but its always been like that and i feel like it may never change. Its best to know your opponents well during those matches and even before you play in tournaments, and by opponents i mean both the players and their decks.
I feel its very comforting to see people wanting to educate themselves with how they are being cheated or how they would be cheated and how to counter it to really shove those people away from cheating further in magic or to prevent themselves and friends from getting shafted due to their illegal actions in tournament play.
Keep up the great work!
I figured I’d try a comedic route.
