This Week in Magic
Hello to my guest co-host this week, Steve (steve@mtgcast.com)! We talk about some M10 pre-releases, the cool special planeswalker Jones soda spotted at lucky pre-releases. The official M10 rules videos are up on YouTube and worth checking out. In Mark Gottleib’s article, we get hint of a new keyword, Intimidate. Zac Hill has joined WoTC as a new intern for the R&D department, congrats! Ben Bleiweis postulates in his latest article that “life totals matter” will be a key theme for Zendikar. Zvi Mowshowitz is releasing a book on Top 8 Magic titled “My Files – Volume 1″ and will be available for $29.99. Last and not least, Mark Rosewater has a fantastic article today on Blue in M10 with a few hints to keep hope for control and about Turtle cards.

Tom & Gavin & Jack & Eric & Conley – Your Monday Night Magic news team!

Hey guys,
great show again, i had a blast myself with the M10 pre-release here in Charlotte, NC. So far the set has been really enjoyable and fun to draft, I’m definitely looking forward to drafting it further. I have to say baneslayer angel is suuuuuuuuper not okay when it hits the board, same goes for the new green hydra.
If anything the most significant thing I’ve enjoyed out of the set is the art. Its just utterly fantastic, it has a lot of magnificent colors, designs, it just really sets the mood to the message i think wizards was trying to bring with the release of the set. That message is, change. speaking of change, I’d have to agree with similar responses to the M10 rules, and that is that its not much different at all and there really isn’t much to huff and puff about.
Personally, one thing I’d like to hear or maybe even links to are variant formats that are out there. Being a magic player since late onslaught to now I’ve never really bothered to explore the different formats out there until EDH was brought to my attention. With the last podcast in regards to cube drafting- that definitely brought attracted our attention between my playgroup and myself to consider playing something else while we wait for zendikar to release and hop back into type 2.
by the way how do you adjust your avatar on here?
i just got back from New Zealand and unfortunately missed the prerelease, I’m dying to rip some packs of M10! Cheers for the cast guys, nice to hear a new voice Steve
No poker content thanks Tom, theres already way more magic content than I can keep up with and poker stuff is not of any interest to me at least.
To adjust your avitar go to Gravatar and it will set it for all wordpress sites.
Steve is A+, I love his slow laid back way of talking about things.
The prelease at my store had18 players and was a lot of fun. I was one of the few players who did play Blue. I had a Blue and White deck that featured a Baneslayer Angel, Clone, and Djinn of Wishes, along with a decent number of flyers and counter magic. I must say, Cloning a Baneslayer Angel is quite devastating. There was one game I won because I was able to Clone the Baneslayer Angel while my opponent had a Shivan Dragon in play. haha
I ended up 4-1 and 3rd overall, my only loss coming to someone who was able to build a soldier themed deck with a copy of the new Cloudgoat ranger type guy.
M10 is fun after all!
I dont think you should completly mixe up with poker, but i think that it would be fine to mixed it up a bit. You could split magic and poker content and you could get new listeners to it. Also you could do crossover casts, like how to get better in magic by using poker knowledge or viaverse…. I dont see a huge backdraw to it.
KeySam
No poker please!
When I want poker, google->”poker strategy” will find me poker strategy. If I go to MTGCast, I should find well, Podcasts about MTG.
I don’t want to wade through non-related items to get to Magic Content. RSS, Feeds, iTunes subscriptions all allow me to find different content (like poker) at my leisure if I want it.
Just my thoughts of course, but I don’t see the need or the reasoning to add Poker content to MTGCast.
Although maybe some candy land strategy and then some chutes and ladders tips and tricks, followed by scrabble and yahtzee dedicated podcasts would be a good addition to the site.
The Jones Sodas are functional reprints. The black is root beer, the red is fruit punch, the green is apple, the blue is bubble gum, the white is cream soda. If you want to buy them off the site its a whopping 35$ shipped for a 12pack. Great show.
Please no poker. This is magic, I do not wan’t hear about poker.
Never.
THX
And we thought once the set was fully released it would be impossible for Wizards to hoax us with anymore functional reprints… got us again!!! ZING!
great show as always! we had 32 in little ponca city oklahoma at the prerelease and the vibes were very excited and positive . gotta admit im awfully jealous of the the tourneys that got the jones cola, its one of my faves. please try not to do poker content on the show with the exception of cross marketing, because any way you can bring in new players sounds great .
Are the forums still set for the future? ^^
Anyway, here I talk about the current poll:
I dislike iTunes because it’s superbulky both in size and CPU usage. I’ve got VLC and while it doesn’t have an in-built store, coverflow, genius, visualizer, you know what? I don’t need that. You know what VLC can do in addition? Video…with lots (not all) of different codecs. There is a certain satisfaction I feel when the programs that I use, do the things that I tell them to do and nothing else.
So I frequent this site every three days or so, because websites are meant to be seen. Sometimes there’s something new to discover like Eric explaining how to change pictures for comment avatars. But ultimately I get the choice to either download or use the flash player. I’ve fallen into the trap to use the flash player several times. You know, listening to a podcast for over an hour while fun is a commitment. What if I have to go somewhere after half an hour, what I just forget about the fact that it plays from the browser and go to another site from the same tab. And here’s the ultimate question, what if I want to listen to it (again) five days from now. Here in my podcast folder I’ve got all the goodies together, like MNM 139. Only a click and the goodness starts.
So if you have spare space do it and because either way you have to download the same amount, right?
Thanks for the positive feedback and comments. Hopefully I’ll be able to help Tom out on those lonely nights when everyone else (except his cats) abandon him!
