Early Gatecrash Testing
Straight from the new KYT CAVE this week, Matt and Kevy talk Gatecrash.
BUT first…
..the boys swap crazy drink stories to get primed for the episode. Matt then talks about playing the Gatecrash beta testing on MTGO and gives us an insider’s view of early interactions with cards in draft and sealed, as well as his thoughts on what guilds are best to choose for the Prerelease. Kevy then talks Standard and Modern decks, as well as new Gatecrash brews Matt has been working on–with some surprising results.
Gatecrash Limited
They also talk about how fun Gatecrash Limited is compared to RTR and answer a key question: does this set force you into guilds too much? The guys then talk finance and look at a few cards to watch as GTC comes out. Matt ends the episode with his stories from Disney World . . oh that poor mouse.

I don’t think you are evaluating orzhov correct. Extort is pretty damn strong. The way I have played Orzhow, is drafting cheap utility creatures like the black and white denizens, along with all the good orzhov cards (extort, defenders, removal). I think the key is to hold on to your spells until you can cast them while triggering extort. It is counterintuitive to hold your 3 drop til turn 4, but unless you really, really need it (say against boros), I think you should. Once you start triggering extort every round, things are getting out of hand very fast. I think it is realistic to extort 8-10 times in a typical 7-8 turn game, which is a huge life swing. Add the evasive creatures in Orzhov and the “free” attacks your utility creatures give you, and you become rather hard to race. And that is not counting cards like the guildmage, which just adds insult to injury.
Orzhov isn’t a guild that overpowers anyone. It just chips away at them again and again, while regaining life along the way. It will lose to aggressive guilds if it doesn’t get its engine going, however, so I don’t expect it to be the strongest of the guilds. I think it is more likely to sit in the middle of the pack.
