Dear Sweetblossom #5 – Lowryn’s Rotating Out, What Do You Think?

Dear Sweetblossom,

With Lowryn rotating out in just a few weeks, what are your thoughts on the impact and what will you miss?

George

Dear George,

Come October 3rd, Lowryn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor and Eventide will all rotate out.  This is going to be very sad because these sets were powerful, a very defining set and fun!  Major decks like Kithkin, Merfolk, Rogues, Treefolks, Elves, Goblins, Elementals, Black/White tokens and Fairies will no longer be around.  I am definitely not sad that Fairies is rotating out because it was no fun to play against and was such a good deck that you had to build a deck asking “Can this beat fairies?”

But along with Fairies rotating out goes lots of lands.  The filter lands, vivid lands and reflecting pool are all going bye-bye.  Now Wizards is giving us good substitutes with the new up and coming land set, Zendikar.  But the fetchlands won’t make too much of a difference because they will only get basic lands in Standard but they are good with the new landfall cards.

White can no longer play [card]Burrenton Forge-Tender[/card] against red decks or [card]Runed Halo[/card], no longer will there be [card]Windbrisk Heights[/card] tricks(which was pretty insanely good with [card]spectral procession[/card] but this won’t be an issue anymore), creature decks can say a happy goodbye to [card]Hallowed Burial[/card], my favorite knight with first strike and lifelink will go goodbye and the best way to return all those 2/2′s, [card]Reveillark[/card] will all go goodbye.

Blue loses [card]Broken Ambitions[/card]( great counter when you are on the play), obviously [card]Cryptic Command[/card] and [card]Mulldrifter[/card] are huge role players that won’t be a clear four of when you play blue, and say goodbye to all fairies and [card]Sanity Grinding[/card].

Black has to say goodbye to [card]Profane Command[/card], [card]Bitterblossom[/card], [card]Nameless Inversion[/card], [card]Thoughtseize[/card] and [card]Makeshift Mannequin[/card] and the perfect Mannequin target of [card]Shreikmaw[/card].

Red….okay the giants are gone but not too many people played those but they were very fun in limited, [card]Flame Javelin[/card] and [card]Puncture Blast[/card].

Green loses some big fatties like [card]Cloudthresher[/card] and [card]Chameleon Colossus[/card], Treefolk and Elves and the card green will miss the most is [card]Helix Pinnacle[/card]-just kidding, I don’t know if it ever saw play.

We all lose the fun mutlicolored/hybrid cards like [card]Doran, the Siege Tower[/card](who didn’t like a turn two 5/5-come on!), [card]Gaddock Teeg[/card](says no to wrath!), [card]Plumeveil[/card], [card]Demigod of Revenge[/card], [card]Fulminator Mage[/card], [card]Murderous Redcap[/card], [card]Boggart Ram-Gang[/card], [card]Firespout[/card], [card]Guttural Response[/card], [card]Vexing Shusher[/card], [card]Divinity of Pride[/card], [card]Stillmoon Cavalier[/card], [card]Figure of Destiny[/card], [card]Snakeform[/card], and [card]Kitchen Finks[/card]!!,

And say goodbye to the combo of [card]Quillspike[/card] + [card]Rite of Consumption[/card].

I know that Kitchen Finks will be sorely missed along with Mulldrifter.  I will personally miss Doran, [card]Leaf-Crowned Elder[/card], and [card]Dauntless Dourbark[/card] just because I played Treefolk for about a year.  I won’t miss Fairies or Cryptic Command leaving but most control players will miss it leaving.  I am more of an aggro player so I have a slightly different view on the blue cards.  Though I respect their powerfulness I will not be a bit upset when they rotate.

Hope this was a nice trip down memory lane.  It kind of feels like we should be signing yearbooks, or cards that are rotating, and taking pictures with them.  We will see some of them in extended but other cards may never be seen again.

Blossom
