MTGCast Episode 66 - Masters Edition, Lorwyn, Promo Cards galore!
“You read it somewhere else, but you heard it here first!”

This Week in Magic
The preview parade continues for Masters Edition and the latest cards are Lim-Dul’s Vault, Forcefield, Serendib Efreet, Goblin Grenade, Khabal Ghoul, and Sylvan Library. Will the entire set be this exciting (e.g. Stone Throwing Devils) or will we get some stinkers like Fishliver Oil or Reverse Polarity? More Lorwyn info with scans of the Pre-constructed decks and the excitement of another 5-color precon (and the apparent rendition of a Merfolk). The third Lorwyn book has also been spotted lurking on Amazon.com and is called Shadowfall and is slated to be an anthology of short stories. We also briefly mention the glimpse of “Liliana Vess”, which just may be one of the “Planeswalker” cards we expect to see in Lorwyn (and also features a non-”Un” card with art that goes beyond the card frame). FNM card for September will be Wing Shards, and a FNM foil Cabal Coffers spotted on eBay that appears to be the November FNM promo. Latest Player Rewards promos are Cruel Edict and Recollect. The latest Judge promo is a foil alternate-art Vindicate! The Magic Academy on magicthegathering.com posts its final article and gives a great index of all the Academy articles to date and will surely be missed. Gavin tells about his experience at “Magic Weekend” (and explains the bizarre “Game of the Year” played with enormous 3-foot magic cards) and points an interesting oddity in the 8th place deck from the California PTQ. He also mentions a new website catering to MTGO players called Modosharks.com and features both articles and videos.

Fact or Fiction
The Lorwyn cycle is based on a “day / night” theme, where the original Lorwyn plane is bathed in sunlight in 24 hours a day (and covered with annoying little Kithkins) and then something happens to cause the “Shadowfall” thus linking these sets to whatever happens in “Jelly”.

MTGCast News
Kyle (aka Yhalothar) has his 2nd place PTQ mentioned (and critcially analyzed) on Frank Karsten’s latest article “Block, with Everything”. We also discuss Dragonkar’s Standard RW aggro deck being discussed in the MTGCast forums.

Ah-Hoy! News
Preview card of the week: Painbringer
Bizarre (and awesome) Pirate video courtesy of Derek on YouTube [Work Safe].

Emails and Comments
Steven with an email asking Tom for the link to Randy Beuhler video (whose audio commentary will make you want to jab out your own ears) mentioned on the last cast AND does Tom still play with his Power 9 cards (and if yes, are you “man enough” to play them without sleeves)?
Awesome email from Troy Dowd responding to our discussions of Tarmogoyf, Master’s Edition, Tribal play, and his local play group!

Tribal Time with Tom
Tribe of the week is Illusions. Tom discusses some of the interesting Illusions like Fathom Seer, Chronozoa, Draining Whelk, Errant Ephemeron, Ixidron, Krovikan Mist, Mistform Warchief, and Shaper Parasite.

Tom’s deck features the interactions of Ixidron with morph creatures and the power of Powder Keg. Troy’s deck features a nice counter-bounce tempo with flying beats and some Tolaria West tricks!
Tribe for next week: Shamans
Tribe for next next week: Giants

Stump the Chump
Tom ponders what happens to the creatures tapped by a Somnophore when it has been turned face down by an Ixidron?

    Sealed Deck
    • 2+ players
    • Each player needs 1 Tournament pack and 3 booster packs
    • Players simply open their tournament packs and the cards from three additional booster packs and build a deck from the cards they opened. Guidelines require a minimum deck size of 40 cards and allow players to add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their card pools as they like.

    Booster Draft
    • 4-8 players
    • Each player needs 3 booster packs
    • At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.
Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.
    Tribal Wars
    • One-third of every deck must be of a single creature type (e.g. "Merfolk" or "Beast")
    • Each deck must contain at least 60 cards, and players may build decks using Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
    • You can use creatures of other creature types, but they do not count towards the "1/3 of single creature type" rule.

    Singleton
    • aka "Highlander"
    • No two cards in a player's deck can share a name unless they're basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests). Players can use Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
