This Week in Magic
Congrats to Gerry Thompson for winning GP Denver! Chris Otwell joins us after attending GP Denver and being in the “Featured Match” for the first round (and sporting a MTGCast t-shirt to boot)! Derek and Chris have some good discussion of the top 8 decks and card choices. Derek digs into the meaty Paul Jordan article breaking down the top decks from Nationals. Gavin would be proud of the September FNM promo being Thirst for Knowledge. Tom is excited for more news regarding the Jace novel, titled “Agents of Artifice“. And we have some more info regarding the Wizards Play Network and the Shards of Alara pre-releases (along with the coolest wedding cake ever seen).

MTGCast News
Chris runs us through all of the coverage from GP Denver including a bunch of talk with Patrick Chapin, Paul Cheon and a bunch of other pros. We even have some new news on the Patrick Chapin TV show(s)! We also discuss the existence of mtgcast.com and how to subscribe to both this show and the other shows on the network.

Since MTGS is currently down, I’ll post here…

WOW! I have just three questions:
    1) What is the title/artist for that song at the end of the show?
    2) How do I get a decent mp3 of it?
    3) Can I get a lyric sheet?

  2. Jaelan Says:

Nevermind, found it! For anyone else who wants it:

And just to answer my own questions:
    1) “Shuffle ‘Em Up” by Tha Gatherin’
    2) Um, see above link.
    3) It’s a little easier to make out the lyrics on my home computer speakers (I was listening to the ‘cast in my car). But it would still be cool to see them written out, if the artist wants to share :)

    Great show this week, guys!

Oh, one other thing. I don’t know if it’s just me, but has anyone ever mentioned to you guys that at the end of a lot of episodes, the dialogue somehow starts to mash together? For an example, take a listen to this week’s episode starting at about 55:00 … Tom asks if there are any upcoming tournaments for Derek, and as Derek starts to answer, you’ll hear what I mean.

I don’t think this happens on EVERY episode, but it does happen a lot, and mostly only during the final few minutes of the show. I don’t really know what could cause this, but I thought I’d mention it since I didn’t know if you guys realized it, and it makes it very difficult to hear what you guys are talking about when it’s occurring.

Otherwise, keep up the awesome work!

The “Tha Gatherin- Shuffle Em Up” Song.

  4. Thomas Painter Says:

    Gavin’s Sweater:
Think deception and distraction. Psyche out your opponent. Airbrush a decklist on your sweater and empasize cards you don’t mind losing, so opponents waste thier removal on your decoys. Make it reversible, flip it over for 3 mana, become Rainbow in the early game, if your opponents are gay they might scoop, but keep a pair of Nice Tits in your sideboard just in case: if blocked by Der Richter, Head of Fashion Police, fetch a Doctor’s Note (2 Green - Artifact: Judges ignore all cross-dressing). Play LSD Spray-Corsage, combo with Blinking Lights and Infrasonic Nausea Emitter. If Gavin’s Sweater is countered, you must play Magic instead.

“Tell us about your first game of magic”:

I was really excited to get my first Starter Pack. Then I threw them away, because I didn’t know anybody who played magic, and who would want to with all these stupid flowers, bits of jewlelry, and wierd mannequin people following Pac Man food up a hill to Stonehenge? … Who knew? … Ten years later I played my first game, I don’t remember it at all, but I do remember the first time I won, twelve games later: 4 Mourning Thrulls and 4 Faith’s Fetters. I won with 30 life to spare and I’ve lost every game since, but I’ve only played about 20 games total, even though I once owned some of the Power Nine.

In my first FNM game (game 6?) I drafted a deck based around Gemhide Slivers, because I had never drafted before, I didn’t know the cards, and I hardly even knew the phases of the game, so I knew I had to have a versatile mana base to cover my drafting and deckbuilding mistakes I knew I wouldn’t know I was making. The deck was much better than my piloting.

    Sealed Deck
    • 2+ players
    • Each player needs 1 Tournament pack and 3 booster packs
    • Players simply open their tournament packs and the cards from three additional booster packs and build a deck from the cards they opened. Guidelines require a minimum deck size of 40 cards and allow players to add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their card pools as they like.

    Booster Draft
    • 4-8 players
    • Each player needs 3 booster packs
    • At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.
Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.
    Tribal Wars
    • One-third of every deck must be of a single creature type (e.g. "Merfolk" or "Beast")
    • Each deck must contain at least 60 cards, and players may build decks using Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
    • You can use creatures of other creature types, but they do not count towards the "1/3 of single creature type" rule.

    Singleton
    • aka "Highlander"
    • No two cards in a player's deck can share a name unless they're basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests). Players can use Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
