This Week in Magic
Hear more about the rumor of the alternate art Jace running around the Release tournaments (hint, it’s an 8×10 art print). The Jace vs Chandra Duel Deck will be coming out soon. Magic Player Rewards winners were surprised by an oversize Feral Hydra in the mail. And DCI members received a new DCI card featuring Sarkhan Vol art. October FNM promo is actually Serrated Arrows as revealed in the latest BDM article. The 2008 World Championships Qualifier on Magic Online are coming up Oct 8-14.

Gavin also discusses some Shards of Alara cards that may be making a splash in Extended (e.g. Agony Warp). He also mentions the very odd eBay auction of a weekend with Patrick Chapin.

ya my store just ran drafts and we had a pretty good time.

    great show!

  2. ChrisTJs Says:

Be careful no one snitches on your store. They could lose all ability to sanction events consider no one was allowed to run drafts during the Pre-release. Which ultimately is part of the problem, not the solution. Not running drafts is a TERRIBLE idea. No why they didn’t? Because enough retail stores complained that their local players already have all the cards they need. Why? Because of the Pre-release. Lame. I don’t know about you, but I NEVER have enough cards. :-)

I really enjoyed having a prerelease at my local store. It was better than having to drive over three hours to one. I really enjoyed playing in the tournament itself, went 3-3, but I like sealed anyways. I was sad that there was no booster draft. Overall I pleased.

Hey there, I’ve had a chance to draft this set and I gotta say, exalted completely ruins this draft. All ur guys cost practically regular cost of a creature of their p/t and they stick exalted right on em, combine that with the fact that the exalted on the creature goes online the turn you play it, its almost like your guy gets haste. If you let it get out of control, it turns into an edict every turn, which is impossible to deal with. In my opinion, the exalted mechanic is not broken, and I think it’s a fine idea for limited, but the problem is that way too many creatures have the exalted ability built in, so 5 people at an 8 man table can all draft the exalted deck, and all come out just fine. On top of the big advantage aggro/exalted already has, its kind of a slap in the face when you put naturalize and the cycling artifact/land d red spell in common slots, so it makes it even harder for the slower esper themed decks to deal with it since ur aggro opponent sides in a couple of hard removal spells. I think if they wouldn’t have put exalted on so many guys, I think it would have been pretty cool, I still force myself into esper and grixis because I’m like Gavin and love to draw cards, especially in limited, and I am truly in love with the Kiss of the Amesha spell. I will have to see how the format pans out overtime as people find out new strategies and ways to getaround the current dominant exalted. As a side note, being artifacts as the theme of esper is practically a sub ability compared to all the others, infact it works against you in terms of giving other cards like naturalize even more use.

thanks, I love your show ___ K-Staks out

    Sealed Deck
    • 2+ players
    • Each player needs 1 Tournament pack and 3 booster packs
    • Players simply open their tournament packs and the cards from three additional booster packs and build a deck from the cards they opened. Guidelines require a minimum deck size of 40 cards and allow players to add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their card pools as they like.

    Booster Draft
    • 4-8 players
    • Each player needs 3 booster packs
    • At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.
Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.
    Tribal Wars
    • One-third of every deck must be of a single creature type (e.g. "Merfolk" or "Beast")
    • Each deck must contain at least 60 cards, and players may build decks using Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
    • You can use creatures of other creature types, but they do not count towards the "1/3 of single creature type" rule.

    Singleton
    • aka "Highlander"
    • No two cards in a player's deck can share a name unless they're basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests). Players can use Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
