Chris,
My name is Dan Alpers. I’m a buddy of Dom’s and a one-time guest on Monday Night Magic (ep. 59). Dom encouraged me to express some concerns about the show here in the comments section. I don’t want to appear whiny but as a hardcore podcast listener, I want to express some concerns and give some constructive feedback to support my viewpoint.
My first concern is the audio quality which I’m sure you are more than well aware of. It just seems to me that when you’re a part of a high quality network such as the MTGcast network, you want to be up to the standards that the other guys are reaching.
My second concern is one that I’m guilty of all the time. I promise things and don’t follow up like I should. It seems that in the last 2 shows you spent more time saying what future podcasts might contain than actually getting to relevant material. I don’t care what you’re gonna give me…maybe. I care about getting the goods right now.
My third concern is the “ego” factor. As a player of the game since 1995, I have that problem going for me once in awhile as well. Over the years I have matured and developed some humility. I don’t often brag about the cards I own or the people that I’ve met as a result of being a player. So when I heard the “rant” about Randy Beuhler, I felt that it was more of a vocalizing of your eog than it was informative. It’s great that you knew him back in the day. I was tempted myself to shake his hand at GenCon this year when he was personally manning the Gleemax booth. It would have been great to say that I met the dude but unfortunatley, as he’s a busy guy, it would have been just that for me…”the time that I met Randy Beuhler.
Now the postive, constructive criticism. Needless to say, you can easily adjust your audio quality. For me, if the audio quality is bad, I don’t care as much about the material. It may sound a little shallow but it’s unfair for me to struggle to understand what’s being said.
You have great things to say! You have lots of experience in the game. We know now that you want to share your insight and knowledege with us. Now’s the time to do just that. Don’t be afraid to just dive in. We’ll understand!
Finally, in response to the Randy story, there’s a fine line between ego trip and story, believe me. Being a humble individual isn’t so bad. So think about the stories that have meaning for you and you think might have meaning for your listeners. Think about those experiences that might enrich us. That’s what we’re looking for when we listen. Especially to your show. We can learn a lot from you. Even someone like me who’s been around for a long time. I try to learn more about this game and the experiences that come from it everyday. I’m sure I’m not the only one and you can help make that happen.
Looking forward to hearing the new and improved Road Warrior Otwell. I hope that you don’t take my criticisms the wrong way. I want to see the show become a success…afterall, I’m doing a little something for Dom that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
Feel free to email me if you have any rebuttals or questions.
Thanks for listening…if you’ve made it this far.

Thanks for your opinions. For the most part, I do agree with a lot of what you said, and as I get better at doing this… I do hope you’ll see an improvement in my style and delivery. I do realize that I’m a bit rough around the edges still.
As far as recording quality… Some of that has too do with what I use for a portable microphone, and locations that I use to record at, and some with my own ability make to use of the microphone and SW editing. I will start making more of an effort to record in a quieter environment, in order to reduce the background noise some. I’ve also been looking at purchasing a new portable microphone, that has the capability to do direct-to-computer audio transfers (IE: USB connection). At present, my portable microphone requires me too do a real-time audio replay and re-capturing/re-recording with an audio recording SW program on my computer, which also impact the sound quality in the process, in order to convert the audio recording into a .mp3 file. This extra work, both reduces the quality of the audio, as well as more than double the amount of work/time that I have to put in, in order to produce any given show. I’m definitely considering a few options in order to help improve that aspect of my shows.
Thanks
Chris
