The Magic School Bus #30 - James Cagle and Paul Cheon - Searching for a Co-Host

Posted on 24 December 2008 by Christopher E. Otwell

Welcome back to another Magic School Bus. After a busy few weeks, we were able to get one out. This episode, Rob is unavailable and I venture out to find a co host…I find Paul Cheon. Paul is moving out of the country for a while, so he decided to let us all know the secret to his success. We also get a deeper understanding of Paul and his life. This is one of my favorite episodes…mainly because there is actually over an hour worth of magic content *GASP*

Your Host(s): James Cagle and Paul Cheon
Show’s Email: themagicschoolbus2k8@rocketmail.com

“All guys love to see a giant pair of t*****s in their face.”

One of the greatest minds in Magic history is leaving the game for a year, and this is the statement that will stay with me the longest. Paul, I wish you luck in the Caribbean. Safe travels…

  2. Conley Says:

Well I’d vote Cheon except I was manhandled on air by the bastard! Lol jk, I totally cracked up when Paul said my draft deck was the worst hed ever seen, because I can’t disagree… it was just one of those bad days of Magic that everyone has.

As for not playing the best deck, I totally understand that argument and have shifted towards playing more mainstream although still original builds lately (like my 5cc deck at states) and intend on continuing to do so… All I have to say is to watch out for GP L.A., its goin down son. Tralala Im out.

  3. Butch Says:

I’m a casual player, so I don’t really know any of the pro players… except LSV and Cheon. I root for those two, for some weird reason. Like most couples, I want to see them succeed in life, I guess. :p

  4. matt t. Says:

finally it took u long enough

  5. james m demink Says:

    kenji is a machine

  6. Gavin Verhey Says:

This was one of the best episodes of any podcast that I’ve ever heard. Absolutely fantastic. Cheon’s words were not only enjoyable, but also inspirational and meaningful. It showed his evolution as both a person and a Magic player. I already told you in person, but good luck in CuraƧao. We’ll see you around, someday.

    Great work guys.

    Gavin

  7. james m demink Says:

what happened to the mail bag song

  8. TJ Says:

This podcast has everything I want in a podcast: competitive Magic talk, likable hosts, and gratuitous use of awesome language. This is a general comment, not episode-specific.

Also, if that fellwar land is true, the scenario Cagle talked about(you with fellwar, opponent with pool) might be incorrect. I think this situation can be equated to someone having 2 pools in play. -no manas.

  9. Paul Says:

Who doesn’t want a giant pair in their face…seriously? Any guy out there??? And Conley, I only do it out of the utmost respect for you haha. I know you’re an awesome player and what you can be capable of, but that deck…an abomination. Butch, I really enjoyed your art, you’ve got some cool stuff on that site of yours. GL Gavin, you seem to be dominating the Seattle PTQ circuit, maybe you’ll be the future of American magic one day. I know I dogged on Seattle for it’s overcast ways, but you’ve got to admit…there are places with better weather.

  10. Conley Says:

Oh, I figured Id refresh Pauls memory on the K.C. Draft, I was actually moving into the 5 color strategy midway through pack 1… picking up 3 obelisks and a couple panoramas. I couldnt get a string of in shard cards going so I figured Id start taking mana fixing. Pack 2 I opened Rafiq of the many and went ahead and took it. I got passed a bant charm and then pick 3 and 4 were rhox war monks… Even if im not going to get the hook up from Paul in pack 3, I couldnt pass up such good cards when my draft was already going sour. I then opened another Rafiq in pack 3 so I just stook to my guns. I ended up with 18 bant playables, so I still had to go 5 color… but that draft was poop from the 4th pick.. I did my best to salvage it but to no avail.

i like rob best. conley is scary. cagle plays 2 much blue

  12. The_Immortal_DJINN Says:

I knew Paul was leaving, but I wasn’t sure why until now. He put it best when he said that no one can really ever quit the game, but his decision to step away for a little bit to take on new experiences and to take on different challenges is not only sensible but admirable as well. You’ll be sincerely missed here in the big CO, but something tells me we’ll see more of you in the future.

And yes, boozing and motorboating is a necessity when it comes to the competitive Magic. ;-)

  13. Gavin Verhey Says:

    Too much blue? Not possible.

Thanks Paul. Maybe someday. And yes, the weather in Seattle can be pretty miserable.

  14. oldblue Says:

great cast, kudos for the hard hitting journalism! by the end of the cast i found myself wondering what kind of job paul is moving to curacao for. i can understand not wanting to give up salary and company but i would have settled for the industry or job description.

  15. Conley Says:

Curacao gamers generally do betting lines, as in setting up odds and what not for gambling that eventually gets used in Vegas, A.C. etc

  16. Sam Says:

Just finished listening to the podcast. Excellent job by James in interviewing Paul. It was a honest and candid. I really enjoyed it.

While I still maintain Paul has had an ordinary year compaired to the year before and is so what “over rated”, you have to respect a guy who puts in the hard yards to be the best in his chosen field.

Good luck in your new job Paul and I hope you find the success you are looking for.

  17. jk Says:

Is there a problem with this podcast? I can hear the into music and song and then the audio volume just cuts out. I can hear them talking faintly, but even if I turn up the volume on everything I can’t make out what they’re saying.

  18. rushmore111 Says:

I also cannot hear the audio after the intro music.

  19. Christopher E. Otwell Says:

Yes, there is an audio problem with this particular version, but something that could easily be fixed with amplification by your player.

    Sealed Deck
    • 2+ players
    • Each player needs 1 Tournament pack and 3 booster packs
    • Players simply open their tournament packs and the cards from three additional booster packs and build a deck from the cards they opened. Guidelines require a minimum deck size of 40 cards and allow players to add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their card pools as they like.

    Booster Draft
    • 4-8 players
    • Each player needs 3 booster packs
    • At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.
Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.
    Tribal Wars
    • One-third of every deck must be of a single creature type (e.g. "Merfolk" or "Beast")
    • Each deck must contain at least 60 cards, and players may build decks using Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
    • You can use creatures of other creature types, but they do not count towards the "1/3 of single creature type" rule.

    Singleton
    • aka "Highlander"
    • No two cards in a player's deck can share a name unless they're basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests). Players can use Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
