#7 - 2008 Apr 15 - The Magic School Bus #7 - James Cagle and Robert Schiermeyer

This week on The Magic School Bus, we return, Matt free, after being bogged down with an overwhelming amount of school work. We have a short show this week as we talk briefly about the finals of the city champs and answer a couple listener emails. James issues a challenge to the listeners for competitive deck ideas with the new set. Rob makes fun of James about his car; hilarity ensues.

Right off the bat i have to say your show is great. It kinda shows that magic players can have a great time and that podcasters have good time too (drinking etc). so i guess your call for deck lists has forced me to share a deck list i have had a lot of fun with. The name for this was originally angelfire and then it turned into blinkfire. Here it is.
    24 lands
    5 island
    5 mountain
    3 plains
    3 adarkar wastes
    2 calciform pools
    2 shivan reefs
    3 battlefield forge
    1 urza’s factory

    15 creatures
    2 venser, shaper savant
    2 bogardan hellkite
    4 lightning angel
    2 siege-gang commander
    2 avalanche riders
    3 mulldrifter

    22 spells/ other
    1 loxodon warhammer
    4 prismatic lens
    3 momentary blink
    3 incinerate
    2 coalition relic
    4 rune snag
    4 wrath of god
    1 disintegrate

    sideboard
    4 pyroclasm
    4 epochrasite
    1 akroma, angel of fury
    2 trickbind
    2 teferi’s moat
    1 crovax, ascendant hero
    1 incendiary command

i have to admit that the deck is not as powerful as it use to when i first played it (when planar chaos came out) but it still can pack a few punches.

And i’m just wondering what is the name of the ending song you guys play.

  2. Conley Says:

Way to address my Nats invitation to you 2. I was excited and then Cagel had to go and get a boner for a 1/1 milling POS lol. Even I wouldn’t play with that guy geez. Anyhow, guess I’ll catch you two at the Pre-Re. Keep up the casts, Maybe I can get in on one soon (Geography sucks in that regard) Peace.

  3. AshmaDaeva Says:

    Hey hey!
I hate to be this kind of bother but i want your email so i can send you a top secret list XD and i want your youtube channel link (i’m not going to say you are great etc etc coz i say that every week lol) Btw you should invite Conley to your show just one time xD

  4. James Says:

No bother at all. The email address is themagicschoolbus2k8@gmail.com. You can also IM me at themagicschoolbus2k8 via yahoo instant messenger.

Greetings gentlemen. Let me begin by saying that in my opinion, you are the premiere podcast on the mtgcast network, and you are doing excellent work. The insightful and intelligent MTG related commentary you provide is unique and unmatched, and the random splashes of humor and drinking-related shenanigans are just as entertaining.

I simply couldn’t pass up this opportunity to have you go over a pet deck I’ve had since Ravnica Block rotated out. Right before Lorwyn came out, I had a powerful and insanely fun Glittering Wish Control deck built. After the Wishboard roated out with the rest of ravnica however, I was left with a barren empty shell of a deck. But with the introduction of Shadowmoor and all the colorful hybrid-laden goodness contained therein, I thought there may be a chance to bring the deck back to life. Here’s my first take on what it should look like:

    4x - Birds of Paradise
    4x - Treefolk Harbinger
    4x - Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers
3x - Doran, the Siege Tower
    2x - Teneb, the Harvester

    4x - Nameless Inversion

    4x - Wrath of God
    2x - Damnation
    4x - Mind Shatter
    4x - Harmonize

    4x - Murmuring Bosk
    4x - Reflecting Pool
    4x - Wooded Bastion
    3x - Llanowar Wastes
    2x - Brushland
1x - Urborg, Tomb of Yagmoth
    2x - Plains
    2x - Swamp
    3x - Forest

    Wishboard:
    1x - Teneb, the Harvester
    1x - Wilt-Leaf Liege
1x - Doran, the Siege Tower
    1x - Mystic Enforcer
    1x - Saffi Eriksdotter
    1x - Oversoul of Dusk
1x - Shield of the Oversoul
    1x - Nath of the Gilt-Leaf
    1x - Harmonic Sliver
    1x - Gaddock Teeg
    2x - Extirpate
3x - Eyes of the Wisent

It’s definitly not a complete list yet, I haven’t even put the deck together yet. But I really like the idea of tutoring for answers on a whim, and I think these colors are some of the strongest available in Standard right now. Let me know what you think, keep doing what you’re doing!

P.S. - You have my complete support if you do ever decide to do an entire episode devoted to boozing. You have guys also seem to have excellent taste for the most part, excepting that Wild Turkey incident. Higher proof DEFINITLY doesn’t equal higher quality!

  6. Squirrel Token Says:

I think I might actually scoop out a Wrath and a Mind Shatter and put in two Loxodon Warhammers, the deck kind of needs them. I might try to slip in a Dawnglow Infusuion into the board as well, tutoring for it and then gaining 12 life seems good against red decks.

  7. Conley Says:

@ Squirrel Token- Your Glittering Wish list appears to be missing the namesake card and yet still be 60 cards. What should the actual list look like?

Also, you appear to be going 2 seperate routes with the deck, Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers is most certainly an aggro card, yet you have 6 wraths int he maindeck. I think you should refine the list to push it into a more controlling or midrangeish type of deck as those best utilize wish int he way you are requesting, that is, to find answers to things.

In addition, Im one of the bigg4est fans of mind shatter on the planet, but 4 Is too many, I would never run more than 3, and 1 of those most likely in the board.

Your also running 8 1 drop green men, with only 8 reliable lands to cast them on turn 1. Reflecting pool and Wooded Bastion dont cut the mustard here, You should cut some number of them for Horizon canopies.

Thats a starting point at least, hope it helps.

  8. Squirrel Token Says:

I have no idea how I actually forgot to put in Glittering wish… Probably because I haven’t actually built the deck yet and don’t have it in front of me to copy down… yeah, I would definitly go down to 3 mind shatter, but probably not 2, I want to see it pretty early on.

It is aimed to be a midrange control, I don’t think the wilt-leafs are that aggro, just a good solid three drop to hold down the fort and block, and maybe get in the red zone once in awhile. I would probably run Ohran Vipers, but if I understand correctly they are going out of standard after Shadowmoor becomes legal. I would like some better card drawing instead of harmonize, (Stupid Wizards cutting Phyrexian Arena in 10th!) but there doesn’t seem to be much in the format right now.

I almost toyed with the idea of putting in Graveborn Muse, but I haven’t played with her much and seems not so great in a format filled with 2-mana 3/3’s and cheap 3-damage burn spells so prevelant. I might just cut the harbingers and add the wishes, and then trim a pool and a bastion and add 2 horizon canopy.

I can’t wait until the release event so I can get my hands on some of these cards! Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for pointing out I didn’t even put Wishes in!

  9. Squirrel Token Says:

After some careful consideration, I think I would cut all 4 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers and put in Kitchen Finks. They seem pretty solid, and they should be able to get the job done in combat, trading and netting life in the process, and they have the added bonus of coming back after wraths.

The more I think about it, I don’t need birds for the super-fast Doran drops anyway, this deck wants to control the board, strip your hand away and then kill you with a fatty, not try to be cute. A more revised list might look something like this…

    -Maindeck-
    4x - Wall of Roots
    3x - Kitchen Finks
2x - Doran, the Siege Tower
    2x - Teneb, the Harvester
    4x - Nameless Inversion
    4x - Glittering Wish
    4x - Harmonize
    3x - Damnation
    2x - Wrath of God
    3x - Mind Shatter
    3x - Coldsteel Heart
    2x - Loxodon Warhammer

    4x - Murmuring Bosk
    3x - Wooded Bastion
    3x - Reflecting Pool
    3x - Llanowar Wastes
    2x - Horizon Canopy
    1x - Brushland
1x - Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
    4x - Forest
    2x - Swamp
    1x - Plains

    -Wishboard-
1x - Doran, the Siege Tower
    1x - Teneb, the Harvester
    1x - Kitchen Finks
    1x - Nath of the Gilt-Leaf
    1x - Saffi Eriksdotter
    1x - Harmonic Sliver
    1x - Oversoul of Dusk
    1x - Mystic Enforcer
    1x - Dawnglow Infusion
1x - Shield of the Oversoul
    2x - Extirpate
3x - Eyes of the Wisent

If you guys could discuss this on air I would appreciate it immensely. Again, I love the show and hope you guys are planning on coming out with a new episode soon!

    Sealed Deck
    • 2+ players
    • Each player needs 1 Tournament pack and 3 booster packs
    • Players simply open their tournament packs and the cards from three additional booster packs and build a deck from the cards they opened. Guidelines require a minimum deck size of 40 cards and allow players to add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their card pools as they like.

    Booster Draft
    • 4-8 players
    • Each player needs 3 booster packs
    • At the start of a Booster Draft, each player opens a booster pack and picks the card he or she wants from it. (You can't see the cards that the other players draft.) Then each player passes the rest of the pack to his or her left. You pick up the pack that was passed to you, select a card, and pass the rest to your left. This process continues until all the cards have been drafted. Next, each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you open the third pack and pass to the left again.
Once all the packs have been drafted, players build decks from the cards they selected, adding as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their decks as they like. Each deck must have at least 40 cards.
    Tribal Wars
    • One-third of every deck must be of a single creature type (e.g. "Merfolk" or "Beast")
    • Each deck must contain at least 60 cards, and players may build decks using Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
    • You can use creatures of other creature types, but they do not count towards the "1/3 of single creature type" rule.

    Singleton
    • aka "Highlander"
    • No two cards in a player's deck can share a name unless they're basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests). Players can use Standard, Extended, Legacy, or Vintage deckbuilding rules.
