Heavy Meta #25 – The Iron Giant Cometh

This glorious 25th episode features none other than the boys’ Metal overlord Robot Large dropping tales of incarceration and paper slinging. The crew start off with some recent Dragon Maze spoilers, Ferret has a brilliant idea about using schools for small tournament venues to generate money for the school and expose more players to magic, Robot Large makes the guys envious of his local game store and tells of his adventures in law enforcement. The whole cast gives a quick recount of the latest Polish Tamales drama and then they dive deep into MTGO news from Ryan Spain, and finish by talking about the pauper tournament which is coming soon.

Gatecrash Dropping Like a Rock
Gatecrash hits MTGO this week then promptly started falling faster in price than any other set ever on MTGO. Except for a few cards like Gyre Sage and Boros Reckoner, most of GTC can be bought fairly affordably at this point. So with that in mind, the crew starts brewing some new decks.

Saito’s Naya list gets a full deck tech and an evolution of the build as Matty puts his own spin on it. Ferret and Matty argue about how redemption will affect the larger players in the MTGO community, and how hard it is to stay on the Pro Tour. The boys end on talk looking forward to Pro Tour Montreal.

..the boys swap crazy drink stories to get primed for the episode. Matt then talks about playing the Gatecrash beta testing on MTGO and gives us an insider’s view of early interactions with cards in draft and sealed, as well as his thoughts on what guilds are best to choose for the Prerelease. Kevy then talks Standard and Modern decks, as well as new Gatecrash brews Matt has been working on–with some surprising results.

Time to talk MTGO
In this week’s episode Matty and Kevy discuss going from paper to fully online and then back again with redemption as well as Matty’s guest spot on the Eh Team and Kevy’s new gig on Public Enemies. Your mind may be blown as Kevy discovers some great new tech with Chandra the Firebrand that you are going to want to pay attention too. Matty then dives into some financial advice on some long term plays as power 9 hits MTGO and the boys wrap up on viewer questions about triggers. Do they dumb down the player base online since MTGO handles it for you and what is the future of the game if paper dies?

Financial Tips
MED 4 Duals – If Power 9 drops in early 2013 these lands will skyrocket. I would be watching these closely if you want to get into Vintage or Legacy on MTGO.
RTR Shock lands – With most under 3 and some under 2 tix its the time to stock up. Look for a 1-1.5 year wait to cash out at double what you buy in now for.
