Three Questions: GP Charlotte – Friday

You’ve waited all this time, and now it is finally here. Chewie went to Grand Prix Charlotte armed with his trusty digital recorder, his wits, and spare batteries. After he stopped and bought them on the way. He and his fellow dorks concocted this edition of the Three Questions once they arrived in Charlotte, sitting in Buffalo Wild Wings actually. Once the Questions were decided, all that was left was to go out and hit the people over the head with them.

And hit them he did! This show represents those that answered the Questions on the Friday of GP Charlotte. You probably knew that from the title though. Judges, players, a Pro Tour champion, and a certain basketball-infatuated writer all heard the Questions and answered them.

Stay tuned for GP Charlotte’s Saturday and Sunday coming soon, and after that the GP Pittsburgh edition!

MTGCast Special – GP Charleston: Day Two

Do you guys remember WAY back in November when Jack & Chewie were given the opportunity to go to Grand Prix Charleston to spellsling for Phoenix Games? If not, you’re forgiven, because that was a pretty long time ago. But as the old saying goes, better late than never, right? This show covers the audio we picked up on Day 2 of the GP. If you want to hear Day 1, you should click here.

Armed only with their wits and a brand new Tascam DR-08 Digital Recorder (courtesy of our own Chris Otwell), Jack and Chewie set out to brave the wilds of the Grand Prix scene. The Three Questions were invoked, the cranberry sauce ran ankle deep, and spells were indeed…uh, slinged? Slang? Let’s go with slung. We stuck a recorder in the face of anyone who would listen (and a few that wouldn’t) and made a bit of content. Judges, pros, durdles, people who looked guilty, people who looked innocent, basically everyone who crossed our path.

We had entirely too much fun at the GP, and we really hope to do it again sometime. And we are, so bear in mind that all this was completely new to us and let us know what you liked and didn’t like. We’re totally doing it again for GP Charlotte.

That’s right, we got TWO Hall of Famers! Chewie (of The Mana Pool and Monday Night Magic) and Cluze (of Card Advantage) sat down with none other than Jon Finkel and Bob Maher Jr. at the very first Escapist Expo. Finkel and Bob were there gunslinging and doing panels to promote the Gamers Helping Gamers charity, and we wanted to give them a chance to tell everyone all about it. Of course, we had two of the greatest and most accomplished Magic players EVER sitting in front of us…so we had to ask a bunch of other questions too! That’s what you do when you find yourself interviewing Jonny Magic and The Great One, you know? Ranging from the state of Standard to power creep to the best draft format to the upcoming Return to Ravnica, we picked their brains about plenty of topics until the time (and the volume of the background noise) decided that we were finished. It was an informative and entertaining interview, and we definitely appreciate Jon and Bob taking the time to sit down with us and talk Magic. Now stop reading this and listen!

– One of the discussions on twitter this week, has been pointing out of a number of people that are playing in GP:Seattle, and who’s MTGO accounts were also qualified and actively being played in the MOCS Season Championship this past weekend. Several of the people’s accounts were active in the event, while the owner was playing in the GP itself. Having another person play on someone account is a violation of the Terms of Service for MTGO, especially for a MOCS, can result in the banning of the account and other actions by the DCI.

– Quote from the MOCS championship requirements: “Although players may have multiple accounts qualified for an End-of-Season Championship or the Player of the Year Championship, players are not permitted to have more than one of their accounts entered in any single event at one time. Players are not permitted to have any accounts entered in events played by other players for any reason. If a player is discovered to have more than one account playing in any End-of-Season Championship or championship event before, during, or after the event, Wizards may take action against that player’s account(s), up to and including disqualification with no refund of product and/or event tickets, suspension of the offending account(s), and/or termination of the offending account(s). Using an account other than your own, allowing any other player to use your account, selling your account, and other similar actions are all violations of the Magic Online User Agreement. If you play in Magic Online events, win, and expect to get your prize, be very, very sure you are playing on your own account. We do not recognize excuses, such as “I and a friend jointly own the account,” “It’s my brother’s account but he gave it to me,” or similar. The only exception is an adult may authorize a single dependent child age 13-18 to play on an account that the adult has established.”

This new, free app will allow players to build decks, research strategies, and find events, and also serves as an advanced life counter for your Magic games. You can even search and filter all 10,000+ Magic cards, with new card sets automatically added! And, as new card sets get released, players can pay a small fee to update the deck builder with the latest content. The app will be releasing later this month for iOS devices, and an Android version is coming soon. Sam Black, pro player and writer for SCG, and Riki Hayashi, Level 3 judge and one of the JudgeCast hosts, joins Chewie and Jack this week. They are here to discuss the changes to the IPG (and the subsequent revocation of most of those changes) and the big news about Organized Play for next year. Join us for a discussion of the loop rule, bad cross-promotions, and board games along with everything else!

– IPG changes taken down almost immediately, with a few exceptions

– QUOTE: “Limited Resources: Now the #2 clan on MTGO.” Limited Resources has surpassed the Diplomats now and has accumulated over 141,000 Packs Won thus far. As of 2011 Dec 22, the #1 Clan on MTGO — Dragonquest — has accumulated over 207,000 packs and has a total of 43 Members in the Clan. Limited Resources has 1217 members in the clan at this time. Truly, a ‘Power in Numbers’ process. Ideally, the Limited Resources Clan will become the #1 MTGO Clan before the end of the Mayan Calendar.
