Show notes of doom! very deep look at the Boros and many sources.

The Boros Legion as a rule is the most organized and militaristic of all the guilds of Ravnica. The combination of Red and White mana makes them an extremely structured organization but on the battlefield they employ rage and passion in combination with order. The whole guild follows a very specific structure with each person knowing exactly where they stand compared to everyone else. The design is almost identical to the Turian Hierarchy of Mass Effect, though it lacks the same chain of ascension and rapid response. If say, a section commander dies, an acting commander may be selected rapidly and there may be suggested replacements but the actual replacement will take several days at least.

This chain still exists in new Ravnica but the angels are no longer in quite the same esteem. The chain also controls what magic members are permitted to use, while red mana will tend to lead towards use of wild and chaotic spells, the white part of Boros restricts use of those spells to those who have shown consistently the constitution to control them.

1. Razia, or in new Ravnica Aurelia
2. angelic warleaders and spiritual advisors, likely to be much less active in new Ravnica
3. firemane angels, while technically a rank take no part in orders or commands and simply enact holy wrath where directed.
4. warrior angels, general stock of angelic warriors, basic by angel standards, still above human

Non angels
5. Guildmages: only members allowed to contact angels, most must wait for angels to contact them, primarily relay orders from angels to guild members and functions as powerful battle mages for the army, little contact with Wojeks
power chain splits here a’s being the League of Wojek and b’s being the Boros army
b6. Army Commander General
a7. Section commander, one for each of the ten districts of Ravnica

Old Boros
Lead by Razia who was rarely if ever on the battlefield. Parun functioned mostly as a spiritual leader, mostly boosting morale with blazing paths of death.

Interim: With most angels dead or missing and Feather having been unbound at the end of Ravnica: City of Guilds, she became the guild leader after the events of Dissension and the death of Razia

New Boros
Aurelia is the new leader and has made it very clear she is a War leader. Exactly what position she used to hold prior to Razia’s death and Feather’s ascension.

We are back again from our aggravating and unplanned summer hiatus. Since Steph is MIA, hopefully temporarily, I managed to dig up a flavor durdle and the amazingly insightful Igor Farkas. Both guest hosts hail from a much less awesome cast who clearly stole our name but they’re still cool people.

Now I hope you’re prepared for the pseudo-essay of show notes all about the Swarm guild of the endless cycle, the Golgari. And just ask Jackson, Igor, or Steph, in a well planned episode show notes are usually this long or longer, enjoy.

http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Golgari_Swarm

Old Golgari: The old Golgari embodied the endless cycle of life and death. Technically according to the original guildpact the golgari sort of function as a soup kitchen for the guildless. Because the Golgari function on the endless cycle of life and death they are able to produce huge amounts of cheap food even from the rot of Upper Rav’s expensive food.

The Golgari are the largest guild in Ravnica drawing from humans, the Devkarin (dark elves), Teratogens, and plant zombies. The bodies of the many dead of the City plane all join the swarm as zombies or plant zombies. The Devkarin are a very strong race of elves though they’re quite sinewy and very pale; they also have a natural affinity for magic even at a basic level. Most Devkarin are either hunters, tracking the remaining beasts through old Rav or they become Shamans like Savra, the short lived queen of the Swarm. The Teratogens are a wide variety of semi sentient to fully sentient non-humanoid creatures including but not limited to harpies, gorgons, and other such pseudo humans.

The guild is the most cyclical both in its nature, expansion, and even in its leadership. the Parun was the God Zombie, holding the undead element as the ruling foaction, Svogthos who was tricked and over throne by the sisters of the stone death, pushing the Teratgens to top dog until Svogthos was rebuilt by Savra and attempted to claim rule again but was immediately usurped by Savra who was quickly surpassed by her brother Jarad, placing the Devkarin as the most powerful faction in the guild at the time of and following the Decamillenial.

The original golgari mechanic is dredge.http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/dredge

Dredge is a static ability that only functions when a creature with dredge is in the graveyard and says “whenever you would draw a card you may instead place the top N cards of your library into the graveyard and put this card into your hand, otherwise, draw a card.”

This ability mostly focused on the black side of Golgari, instead of embracing the guild’s cyclical nature it was incredibly one sides, putting cards into the graveyard, either to recur them or to return specific cards.

New Golgari
http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/211c#golgari
Planeswalker’s guide to Golgari

The guild has not changed largely since the events of the original ravnica block, though due to Jarad’s leadership, insects, which he has always had a natural affinity for, now play a larger part in the guild’s forces; likely leading to the change in the guild symbol.

The guild is mostly the same factions it used to be but the Undead have shifted a bit. Fungal zombies are now a bitter more common than “true zombies” relatively decreasing the intellect of newly named Lotle, though the faction is now lead by the necromancers controlling the horde. Over all the Lotleth in gtheneral feel under appreciated as they’re mostly considered slaves, laborers, or second class citizens by the rest of the guild, but as with most proletarians, they’re the most numerous faction.

The Street Swarm is also a fairly new faction, at least in that it only recently was named. The now numerous and empowered Devkarin favor a policy of expansion, the street swarm is their tool. This legion forms small gangs all over the city, sowing seeds of decay into areas the golgari don’t control while sowing the seeds of growth in those that have decayed completely. They’re a vital tool that allows the golgari to quickly expand into new areas and keep their endless cycle of life, growth, death, and decay flowing endlessly.

The mechanic for the new Golgari embraces the color combination better than the old though it will not likely ever reach the competitive highs of it’s predecessor. Scavenge is recognized as “flashback for creatures” (pay N mana: Exile this creautre from your graveyard and put a number of +1/+1 counters equal to this creature’s power onto target creature. Play this only as a sorcery.

This legion forms small gangs all over the city,</itunes:summary>

Another episode of the show of feast and famine lives, sadly again devoid of steph. In her place we again have Jackson, at a more reasonable time. On this episode we actually have some awesome discussions. Jackson opens with his M13 pre-release experience, and I shut up and listen because I didn’t go to one.

Once the pre-realease stories are done, we get onto my shtick, ART! We first look at the six spoiled cards for From the Vault Dirt, which is getting a bit more appealing now. Except for Dryad Arbor Jackson and I decide that all the art looks gorgeous, though Murmuring Bosk cheats a bit by having a little guy in it’s art.

After that we move onto the pictures of Ravnican art from the comicon panel, which oh my god they’re bloody gorgeous. We’ve got five pictures which look like they’re going to be panoramic basic lands, a picture of what appears to be the sign of the new guildpact, the image of Niv-Mizzet standing behind Jace sadly not eating him, a picture of Gideon with the new Boros Guild master, and then ten peices of art which are the new/current guild masters of Ravnica. Again, this art is GOREGOUS! Check it out, do it, now!

You can find the From the Vault dirt spoilers here: http://tinyurl.com/7gujnt5
And the Ravnica goodness here: http://tinyurl.com/76xfndy

Hope You all like this episode, and again while I refer to him as a taint, I really have no problems with Chris Landsdell.

Here we go again with another episode of the show of Feast and Famine, but with a twist. Steph is MIA some where in the wilds of Vid Con, some convention somewhere in LA, So I was almost on my own this week. To spare all our listeners from listening to me ramble on my own I yanked on of our most vocal listeners out of bed at 2 am. Yeah I suck at time zones, apparently 10 AM for me is 2 am in Australia, sorry Jackson.

Well Jackson and I talk about mostly the M13 spoilers through a combination of flavor analysis and a bit of conversation about our cards’ playability. I must admit, I really like all the stupidly expensive casting cost cards in this set, Omniscience, World Fire, Elderscale Wurm, and Battle of Wits are all hilarious but so weird. And in case I wasn’t clear in the episode, while I don’t always agree with Chris Lansdell, I do hope the new Liliana brings back mono black, at least while Obliterator is still legal in standard.

Ok off my soap box, hope you like the new episode, and I hope we can get Jackson back on again, at a less ridiculous time of course. And remember, our contest is going on for one more week and you can enter by leaving good, funny, or helpful comments on the MTGcast page for this episode or on our site at http://showoffeastandfamine.blogspot.com/ .

Hope you guys like the episode and our protective anti-Melvin bubble it provides, patent pending.

Well, yet again we got supremely delayed, this time by a terrible prison sentence far beyond our control. We had to do…FINALS! Yes, those evil tests that college professors only barely prepare you for that count for most if not all of your grade. But we’re back now, I’m in my apartment, Steph in her parent’s house so our schedule should be back on track from now on. Today we meant to talk about planeswalkers, but with no show notes and no preparation we basically just ramble for about an hour. If you can stand our rambling this episode, then I congratulate you and would like to invite you to a live stream we’ll be doing to make up for our almost a month without an episode. The live event will be on Friday at the earliest but probably won’t happen until Saturday or Sunday, I do still work and Steph has stuff.

I sincerely apologize for the huge delay between episodes and hope you all will forgive us as we try to get back on track. Please enjoy the show, or if you read the notes afterwards, I hope you enjoyed the show.

The live event will be on Friday at the earliest but probably won't happen until Saturday or Sunday, I do still work and Steph has stuff.

I sincerely apologize for the huge delay between episodes and hope you all will forgive us as we try to get back on track. Please enjoy the show, or if you read the notes afterwards, I hope you enjoyed the show.

We are back after a weird and stupid week where we were prevented from recording. Sorry about that, though hey it does mean we get to look at the whole spoiler at the same time that we zoom into very specific cards. We lost all our senses in this with weird tangets, silly topics, heck in a couple places I forgot I was hosting a flavor podcast and just started talking about card playability.

Thankfully that sort of kind of left me pretty quick and we returned to the real point of the podcast, glorious glorious flavor. The only thing I feel like we really need to revisit are the events in between Dark Ascension and Avacyn Restored. We cover briefly the creation of the wolfir and the three angel flights and last episode we covered the destruction of the Helvault, but so much stuff happened that we have not had a chance to cover, or cover deeply enough. The Wolfir are my personal pet topic to revisit, but I doubt it will be the last thing we talk about returning to from this incredibly flavorful block.

Now this is us so of course we cover some other weird stuff like steph’s continuing fascination with Buffy, mine with Game of Thrones, oh and my new obsession with the X-files. Next episode we plan on returning to our plan and finish up with the humans of Innistrad but we’ll see how that turns out. So if you’re reading the show notes, how would you feel about reviews of the old magic the gathering novels? Remember you can always contact us via email, twitter, or facebook, see you guys around.

So Steph and I today end up going off plan and instead of reviewing the humans on Innistrad and the many planes of the multiverse we decide to go over, in less time than usual, Avacyn spoilers and the Return to Ravnica announcement.

I wish I had more to say about this episode, but frankly, we rambled a lot. We don’t have the information to really talk about the full Avacyn Restored story, we know nothing about Return to Ravnica as well, so yeah spoilers! Mostly I’m just trying to avoid putting my foot in my mouth more than I already have. On that note, I apologize for my misinformation on the original Ravnica, I should have done more research on a block i never got chance to play during. That is part of the reason for the delay in the human episode.

Final thought, I’m super sorry I echo, like I tried to say all my normal recording spots were locked so I had to deal with some weird basically stone closet space.

Enjoy, or at least try and then yell at us.

This week Steph and I talk all about Spirits. Over magic’s history spirits have been a neglected tribe. They’re no where near as wide spread as humans, but unlike other niche tribes like kithkin or Kavu, they have featured in multiple sets. The first set they played a major role in was the last big palate cleanser block, Kamigawa.

In Kamigawa spirits were a multi color tribe that spread to all the colors with their own very specific abilities like splice and Soulshift. In Kamigawa block the spirits raged a twenty year war against the mortals of the plane, similar in theme to the endless attacks on the humans of Innistrad.

After Kamigawa we hit Ravnica block. While it was not spirit based one of the major factions of Ravnica was partially spirit focused. The Orzhov Church of business is made at least partially of Spirits and is in fact controlled by a council of spirits.

Then we obviously hit the amazing block we’re in now, Innistrad.

Sorry the show notes are less awesome than last week but hey the show is pretty good and I think we go over these ideas better on the cast. Enjoy guys and please remember feel free to email, tweet, or carrier pigeon us with any suggestions you have.

We seem to have returned to our weekly recording schedule, a fact We’re all very happy about. Since we’re back, this week we continue our deep look at Innistrad horror tropes and their real world counterparts. This week we are obviously looking at zombies. Some how we manage to spend most of the episode, about a hour, talking about zombies. Before we reach the magical land of Innistrad we talk about the three Zombies of the real world, the “magical” zombies, classic “fictional” zombies, and the theoretical “philosophical” zombie. Steph actually did a lot of the show notes this week and since I managed to grab a bit of free time I can take this chance to link to some of the awesome stuff we referenced.

So here are some nice links to the Wiki articles steph used:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie (hatian or magical zombies)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_(fictional) (fictional zombies)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophical_zombie (philosophical zombie)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_CDC_warning_about_zombie_apocalypse (the CDC’s zombie apocalypse advice)

We actually spend little time on Innistrad zombies on their own because we talk about them during our other discussions. So after we briefly discuss Innistrad on its own we talk about two important articles that happened to be posted the day we were recording. So first was this little baby http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/933 . This little Arcana article talks very briefly on the opening of the helvault event at the Avacyn Restored Pre-release coming April 28 and 29.

The other article we talk about and I would really advice you check out if you like story is this week’s savor the flavor article http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/stf/187 made up of short vignettes about all the important people on Innistrad and all the ways they keep bouncing off each other.

One last thing before I leave you, this is the best picture of the unncanny valley I could find and I would seriously suggest you check out some more information because it is a very interesting topic. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f0/Mori_Uncanny_Valley.svg/450px-Mori_Uncanny_Valley.svg.png

So we’ll see you guys next week and remember we’re always open to emails, tweets and facebook messages from our listeners.

Since we're back, this week we continue our deep look at Innistrad horror tropes and their real world counterparts. This week we are obviously looking at zombies. Some how we manage to spend most of the episode, about a hour, talking about zombies. Before we reach the magical land of Innistrad we talk about the three Zombies of the real world, the "magical" zombies, classic "fictional" zombies, and the theoretical "philosophical" zombie. Steph actually did a lot of the show notes this week and since I managed to grab a bit of free time I can take this chance to link to some of the awesome stuff we referenced.

So here are some nice links to the Wiki articles steph used:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie (hatian or magical zombies)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_(fictional) (fictional zombies)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophical_zombie (philosophical zombie)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_CDC_warning_about_zombie_apocalypse (the CDC's zombie apocalypse advice)

The other article we talk about and I would really advice you check out if you like story is this week's savor the flavor article http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/stf/187 made up of short vignettes about all the important people on Innistrad and all the ways they keep bouncing off each other.

One last thing before I leave you, this is the best picture of the unncanny valley I could find and I would seriously suggest you check out some more information because it is a very interesting topic. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f0/Mori_Uncanny_Valley.svg/450px-Mori_Uncanny_Valley.svg.png

So we'll see you guys next week and remember we're always open to emails, tweets and facebook messages from our listeners.

We do mention the ridiculous plethora of problems we had which prevented the show’s recording several times. several of which are also responsible for this being sent to mtgcast later than planned. This week we take a very quick and fast look at vampires, their myths all around the world and then hone in on the crazy aristocratic ones living on Innistrad. It wasn’t planned, but we did also take a closer look at all of the four major bloodlines still present on Innistrad, the Markov, Falkenrath, Voldaren, and Stormkirk families. As always we devolve into non-magic content, but due to more time crunches there was way less spastic word flailing on nerdy topics. As usual we do also ask if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please hit us up on twitter, facebook, or email. Sorry no links in the show notes today, if you want to see any of the articles we mention, hit us up any where and one of us can link you to them and i’ll attach them to next week’s show notes.

Unlike the past two weeks with very lax reparation we spent all of last week preparing for our topics this week. We’re still ourselves so we spend a good fifteen minutes talking about nothing in particular before getting into some magic content. As we try to do every episode we take a look at the latest Savor the Flavor article, on undying, along with the arcana articles from the past week that interest us. We do also mention the flavor based deck articles I’ve been writing for Card Shark. Once the time wasting is done we get onto our real topic. Steph and I take most of the episode to explain the origins of werewolves, their symbolic ideas, their modern interpretations, and finally a very in-depth look at how Wizards interpreted the man wolves for this latest set. But again, it’s still just Steph and I so when our planned material runs dry we go very off topic, discussing the Occult and Paganism and their more subtle examples in Magic the Gathering along with some nice literature about the religions and a few novels about characters deciding between Catholicism and Paganism. Some how this lead into our ending topics about Pokemon Black and White 2, The Mass Effect 3 multiplayer demo, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. We close it all up with a thanks to Classic Reaction, the band who provides our music, and Pet Pardons, a facebook group set up to put death-row pets into loving homes. We will see you guys next week, hopefully to super analyze Vampires in general and the aristocratic blood suckers Wizards has placed in front of us.

Quickly followed by a short rant about the lack of a Tovolar card, werewolves deserve a true legendary as well. After I calm my butt down we start talking about the launch party change and the awesomeness of the planned Avacyn Pre-Release. We also look at the Dark Ascension event decks and some of the intro packs, and pick the flavor and strategy apart a bit. After running out of magic content some how we ended up on neopets and some very odd youtube videos:

The Show of Feast and Famine is back, after a four month hiatus, the episodes prior to which will never be spoken of again for they were terrible. For episode one of the show’s gritty and less lazy reboot, we talk about the Dark Ascension cards we are really into and can’t wait to really play. We spend at least an hour going over cards and drooling over the delicious flavor of this set and beautiful art. Of course that leaves about another hour of random nerdiness, populated by everything from Star Wars to Dr. Who and all the way to Pokemon before we have to bail out of the downward spiral of Starcraft talk.

We are a couple of very casual players who love the game. Specifically we’re gigantic Vorthos mentality players. We both only started playing in Zendikar but my co-host and I love the lore, and one of us has spent too much time hunting through the MTG wiki. Whether we mean it or not, any magic talk between us always leans towards flavor, art, and multiplayer. However we are well rounded nerds and occasionally slip into other realms of geekery.
