Andrew, from Sydney, Australia How did you become interested in classic in the first place? I wanted to take a break from grinding standard events so I decided to try Classic. I heard good things about

the format and the community. If you could play any classic deck what would it be? Probably Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I love combo decks, having played Swans and Splinter Twin in previous standard

formats. Being able to play 5 or 6 of the most overpowered combos in existence sounds insanely entertaining. What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community

involvement? Splitting the finals of two standard premier events mid-2011 with a rogue deck (shout-out to Smi77y) and then

doing well with it at Australian nationals. In terms of Classic, it would have to be making the top 8 of the

Classic PotY race after joining so late in the season.

What’s your name and where do you live?
My name is Calavera and I live on MODO.

How did you become interested in classic in the first place?
I love classic drafting thanks to being old and when MED2 came out I drafted playsets of all the duals… and well I decided to try and play with them instead of sell them….

If you could play any classic deck what would it be?
Merfolk. Because Dangerlinto hates that they are a part of the format and I like to annoy people.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?
I don’t feel like any sanctioned tournaments I’ve played in have been anything special…. I have had to miss all of the Legacy MOCS and the Classic Winter Celebration and Wizards hasn’t had any other worthwhile Eternal Format events for the many years I’ve been playing MTGO. They don’t even have any big draft tournaments (512 player draft would work numbers wise) as I hate sealed. So I blame Wotc for not having anything for me to do that would make me proud.

My name is A. J. Goldman, and I live in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States. How did you become interested in classic in the first place? I’ve liked fringe formats (e.g., 100-Card Singleton) featuring unusual card interactions and swingy matches for quite a while. But the reason that I finally decided to build a deck and commit to a tournament was to support the community enderfall was helping to (re)build. I don’t like seeing close-knit communities centered on strange formats become endangered or extinct on Magic Online; you can’t play this weird stuff easily in paper Magic, and it feels good helping to stem the encroaching tide of Standard-homogeny on MTGO. I must admit, after seeing this tournament succeed thus far, that I have hopes to help support other neglected online formats, as well as Classic, from here on out. If you could play any classic deck what would it be?

I will not stop piloting rogue lists until at least the Tier 2 of the Classic metagame has shifted to include only bad deck ideas that I’ve been storing in my brain’s broom closet, though right now, I’m excited to keep trying out more (and more refined) Myr Retriever/Junk Diver-interactions as well as Birthing Pod (Tangle Golem, Allosaurus Rider, Skyshroud Cutter, Vine Dryad?) lists.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?

As far as deck-building or tournament-related accomplishments, I guess my favorite is my decision to play RUG in 100-Card Singleton with the Scapeshift in the sideboard and a Burning Wish in the main (you never play that unless you’ve got 7 lands on the battlefield anyway, right?). If I were answering more seriously, I would have to say I’m quite proud to have contributed to maintaining the consistency and integrity of MTGO Academy’s front page since I started working there as Content Manager. This isn’t (only) a shameless plug; I really hope and think we’re starting to build something good for the community.

Brad Zarn, Twin Cities, Minnesota How did you become interested in classic in the first place? I’ve been playing Magic since 1994, so I am drawn to the nostalgia older cards. I played a lot of paper Vintage prior to being introduced to MTGO. Classic was immediately my format of choice. I’ve enjoyed it’s evolution towards Vintage as all of the sets have come online. The Classic community is great. I’ve met many mature players with family schedules like myself. If you could play any classic deck what would it be? Anything with 4 mysticals, 4 emrakuls, and channel. What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement? Making the top 8 of QT #1 is right up there. It was a blast to participate in with all of the competitive decks, good players, and great coverage. I also take pride in my involvement in firing many of the Classic DEs this year. It has been challenging, though satisfying to see some success. How did you become interested in classic in the first place? I am a fan of under-exposed Eternal formats as they are fun for deck-building and have nearly limitless possibilities (or at least it feels that way when the build is good!). Also, Scott’s (enderfall on MTGO) articles on MTGO Academy would frequently inspire deck-building hypotheses between PlanetWalls and myself that ended up in some hilarious rough draft lists. If you could play any classic deck what would it be? Something with Dark Rituals, creatures that attack and spells that accumulate to induce headaches in the opposition. Maybe I don’t want the card disadvantage of Dark Rit, but Turn 1 Necro without a combo sounds so fun! Also, it could be more than one color if I ditch the Rits… hmmm… What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement? My involvement in the organization and promotion of 100 Card Singleton has been my most rewarding MTGO-related accomplishment. I highly recommend any Classic players to give the format a try. (It feels like a combination of Cube and Legacy/Classic, with the creatures being the best or the most unique of Standard throughout the years.) What’s your name and where do you live?
My name is Josh and I live in West Lafayette IN. Though I have to say that I have come to like the Midwest I am a Southern boy at heart, having grown up in Kentucky (as my accent attests to, for those of you who heard me on my YSO guess cast).

How did you become interested in classic in the first place?
My love of Classic goes way back to the early days of MTGO. I have played paper magic since Antiquities. Right when MTGO came out I was moving away from paper Magic (getting married and all that) and had sold off my precious power. MTGO allowed me to keep playing, and I naturally gravitated toward the formats with the older cards. It was tough for a while as we did not have a lot of the old cards (I remember being excited playing Legacy Threshold with shocklands) but as the old releases and MED came along the format really blossomed.

If you could play any classic deck what would it be?
As far as any Classic deck, at heart I am a combo player and Classic has the most busted toys to play with. I love Classic Dredge and Oath, but I really wish Storm was better in Classic than it is right now. I would love to rock Gush Doomsday, or old style Gush Tropical Storm style decks. (Stink on you Lodestone Golem)

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?
As for MTGO accomplishments, I was glad to finish 3rd in last year’s player of the year race. Grinding through all those Winter Celebration events was both fun and quite tough.

What’s your name and where do you live?
Emanuel Viçoso. I’m from Lisbon, Portugal, but currently living in Maputo, Mozambique (southern Africa).

How did you become interested in classic in the first place?
I’m mostly a limited player. At one point I started playing a monthly game, where I put in X dollars each month, and when the drafts eventually run out, see how much value I am able to pull. Since standard cards fluctuate a lot, I started selling the drafted money cards, and buying legacy and classic staples. After a while, I had enough to start building decks. Classic appealed to me more than legacy, mainly because of it’s tight and awesome community. It’s also an amazing format where every single decision within a turn can decide a game. It’s somewhat frustrating, because you screw up once and you lose, but it also teaches you a lot about the game as a whole. If you’re a good classic player, you’re an excellent magic player. I’m still trying to climb up that particular hill…

If you could play any classic deck what would it be?
Tough question. I’d love to play pure control (I had success with landstill in a couple of DE’s back in 2011), but Delver killed it.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?
Not much to say here. The best result I have in classic is a 2nd place in one of MMogg’s classic league, playing hate bears. I won a couple of DE’s, and have one top 8 in a CQ open (2011), but that’s about it.
But I guess the biggest accomplishment I’m proud off is not really mine, but of the community as a whole. I find it amazing that so many people are willing to pull together to promote this format. Since you gave me a voice, let me use it to thank all the people that have been fighting for classic this last couple of years, especially dangerlinto, MMogg, the YSO crew, enderfall and all the others that keep writing, joining DE’s just so they can fire, and extending such warm welcomes to all the newcomers to this format. That is the one thing that gives me confidence that Classic is here to stay (even if it turns into vintage at some point down the road).

What’s your name and where do you live?
Pete Jahn, near Madison, WI, USA

How did you become interested in classic in the first place?
I play anything and everything, but I like old cards, old frames and old interactions. I loved playing Extended, back before Ice Ages rotated out. Classic has a similar feel.

If you could play any classic deck what would it be?
My all-time favorite deck was GB Survival, but really the answer is “anything I have not played yet.” I tend to get bored with a deck once I understand it.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?
Playing on the first Community Cup team. The whole build-up, the trip to Renton, breakfast with the team and late night games with the team and lots of Wizards folks, plus playing at WoTC. Great times.

Any Magic accomplishment would have been a tougher question…

What’s your name and where do you live?

My name is Watabe Naoto and I’m from Singapore. (It’s shown on the APAC Island I always play)

How did you become interested in Classic in the first place?

I have always been a fan of Vintage but I didn’t have enough resources to work with so I only played Singleton which was one of the few other formats that allowed me to use those cards. I did well in constructed in that format and I slowly gained enough resources to move into Classic and Classic has been kind to me ever since so I have a pull from both interest and self-interest.

If you could play any Classic deck what would it be?

If I could choose a deck to play, it would definitely be a deck with Gush just based on its raw power. It’s almost given that I would play a deck without Force of Will now. I have learnt my lesson from the CQ league to not leave Gush out anymore.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?

I have won a bunch of cool cards from tournaments, namely Force of will, Foil and non foil Tarmogoyf, Foil MED 2 set, foil promo vendilion clique. Vintage players have their “powers won” list and this is the closest I have on MTGO.

Michael Dolan and I currently live in southern Ontario in Canada.

How did you become interested in Classic in the first place?

Seeing PhilipJFry’s Belcher deck in action in the Tournament Practice room. I had been playing Legacy Belcher and when I saw the power difference between Legacy and Classic Belcher, I knew I had to give Classic a try.

If you could play any Classic deck what would it be?

MUD! I know a lot of people hate the brown menace, but I really enjoy playing that deck.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?

Of course, the only reason I am even being considered for this spotlight is the Classic League, so I guess it has to be that. I’m really happy to see that all the work I put into the League is paying off with the new iteration championed by Magic Eternal. I would like to think that the success of the League’s past, in part, is the foundation for future bigger and better successes. That connection between the leagues is less to do with ego and more to do with wanting to see that which I devoted a lot of care and energy to thrive rather than die.

How did you become interested in classic in the first place?
I’m an old(er) guy. I started playing in 1995 and fondly remember playing with these powerful cards when I was younger. The powerful spells appeal to me more than the modern powerful creatures do. I also enjoy a good counterspell, which WotC doesn’t seem to embrace anymore in the wake of all the moaning over Mana Leak.

If you could play any classic deck what would it be?
I enjoy playing Jace decks, though Storm is my “Spike” deck of choice.

What is your favorite MTGO accomplishment whether it relates to tournament play, deck innovation or community involvement?
I’ve not had much notable tournament success that would compare with my accomplishments writing and promoting the Classic format through my article series on MTGO Academy, Unlocking the Vault.

Time Stamp for this week

1) When looking to release the block at once why mixed booster packs rather than maintaining draft integrity with make all three packs available at once so we can still draft MNP as originally intended.

There just aren’t a lot of players who are super excited about reliving the Masques Block draft experience as it was originally intended. Urzas Block has a lot of nostalgic resonance with players who played during its original release (a group of which I am a part of) and enough powerful cards and historical Magic cache to appeal to those who weren’t around at that time.
Masques Block doesn’t have that same level of adoration (though I think that whole block gets a bad rap simply because it is sandwiched between some very good sets). We received a lot of feedback, both internally and externally, about Masques Block and we felt there was little risk to trying something a bit more out of the box.
We also knew very early on that we didn’t want to release this set over the course of 12-18 months like the three previous classic-based blocks. In addition, we wanted to finish releasing the final classic sets as soon as possible. For Masques Block, we were able to build enough lead time into the schedule to build it all at once, whereas that wasn’t the case for the other classic sets.
Looking back, we were pleased with the success of Shards of Alara Block booster packs in Magic Online and felt this was an excellent opportunity to try something like that again. We think that this is a clear case of the experience being exciting enough to outweigh any negatives of releasing Masques Block in its pure form.

2) This release means we get both Tangle Wire and Port coming into the system. Is there concern that this will push Workshop based decks over the top? Have you had discussions internally (leaving the meta to readjust to Dredge v ‘Shop; restricting Spheres (making this the first card to be restricted in classic and not in vintage; bring Power 9 to address the balance).
We have never been afraid to let Classic have powerful cards and see how things shake out. Necropotence is a good example, where we left it unrestricted until it was clear that something had to change. With that said, we are also aware of cards that need to be restricted out of the gate (like Tolarian Academy). With the release nearly two months away we have time before we would need to make a definitive call on this. If we decide to adjust the restricted list, I would look for a Banned & Restricted announcement on the Magic Online Group blog sometime around November 18.

3) Will all 12 pre-constructed theme decks be available in store will there be any community based engagement to develop an additional deck such has been done with other releases.
We will not be releasing the theme decks for any of the Masques Block sets. With only a two-week release period for our classic blocks, releasing twelve decks at once just isn’t practical. In addition, the audience for that kind of pre-constructed product isn’t very large.
We stopped doing the community theme decks after the release of Exodus for a similar reason. While we really liked the opportunity to engage the community in an interesting way, there were not enough players who wanted the product to continue making those decks.

4) Avatars – Will we receive only 2 for the entire block – Can I make a special request for Hammer Mage.

Yes… there will be only two avatars for the Masques Block release and have already been chosen. Sorry. The avatars are two iconic cards from the block and look very cool so I think players will be pleased.

5) We are happy to see the continued support for product release to the Eternal formats – where do you see Classic fitting into magic with the arrival of Modern.
The formats all fill various player needs and I think there is certainly room for all of them. From a purely theoretical perspective, I think the basic format structure is really solid and like the logic in the progression of Block, Standard, Extended, Modern, Legacy, and Classic (or Vintage).
The biggest hurdle is trying to ensure that there are enough players at any given time for each format. I would like to believe that we can build those communities online because our pool of players is larger than anywhere else you can play Magic. Formats like Extended, however, are more cyclic in nature based on what is going on in the paper world and it has been harder to build evergreen communities for them.
A format like Classic has a more stable, albeit smaller, user base which is certainly something we have been trying to leverage. Creating set start times for the Daily Events was designed to try and appeal to that core group by giving you all a handful of set times you can rally around. It’s been good to see Classic hit a little groove and successfully some Daily Events the last few weeks.

6) We love some of the recent new cards which will have or continue to have an impact on our format such as Jace TMS, and more recently Snapcaster Mage and Laboratory Maniac – Are you ever concerned of breaking the eternal formats by releasing new product. For example Lodestone Golem has really helped to cement workshop based strategies and might be enough to push the deck over the top post Tangle Wire and Port.
I know that a ton of work goes into the design and development of each product to ensure that they appeal to as many players as possible. In order to impact the eternal formats, especially one like Classic, the cards need to be pretty powerful or do something very interesting which will always run the risk of having unintended consequences.
The nice thing about formats where powerful cards exist, however, is that there tend to be answers for cards than can cause issues in formats with smaller card pools. If a card becomes problematic, we can use the banned and restricted lists to help restore some balance.
While we don’t relish banning or restricting cards, there is some solace in the fact than most eternal format players are familiar with the idea of B&R lists and that their formats rely on them. This makes messaging any B&R changes easier than it would be in formats where there are a higher proportion of newer players, like Standard or Block.

7) Masques almost completely syncs up Legacy Online with Legacy paper and fills in some niche cards like Land Grant and Submerge etc. The out of sync banning of Mental Misstep has been catastrophic in terms of events firing online for the legacy format – Have you considered better syncing implementation of changes to banned and restricted lists.
The Innistrad release was a perfect storm of sorts. I don’t think we have ever seen a time in Magic Online when so many formats were so drastically different than their paper counterparts and we are certainly aware of it. Unfortunately, our development cycles have fairly rigid timelines and it is difficult to make significant adjustments on short notice.
Because of how we currently do beta testing for Magic Online, we need to maintain a buffer between the paper releases and digital releases. Add the fact that format changes are typically tied to card set deployments and you can end up with the lag we saw this time around.
We have already had several conversations about how we can address this problem in the future, but there are factors outside of Magic Online that need to be considered. I am confident that we can find some solutions that will let us reduce that lag and keep the discrepancies to a minimum, though it may take some time to fully implement them.
As for Legacy, I am very happy that after Masques Block releases on December 5 the paper and the digital formats will be effectively the same. Even though the card pools are not 100% in line, the vast majority of tournament relevant cards will be available which means Legacy players can just talk about Legacy without qualifiers.

Round 1
G1 I resolve a dream Tides against my heavy green opponent and lock up the game with that and Dream Fighter. Lotus Vale came out t3 and helped a lot.
G2 I kept a really loose hand of 4x blue cards and 2 swamps 1 plains. I never draw an island till turn 5 and even though the game started to turn around, River Boa ended me.
G3 I keep a 1 lander with Impulse Jolt and Moss Diamond. He leads t2 Boa and I skip land drop 2. I Hit on t3 and 4 though for a t4 Heavy Ballista. He was color screwed and the game ended with me alpha striking for the win. We both had 30 seconds on the clock.

Round 2
Im matched up with a UW player, and his deck is just much better than mine was. He crushed me in 2 games easy peasy.
